Looking to play SOTMK when we hit Magic Kingdom in June With daughter. Wanted to buy ahead of time to have her learn game first. Found the set with map, keycard, gameboard and cards on the disney park app. Thought maybe you could also just buy booster packs of cards but I don't see them. Do they not sell just booster packs?

Just go to the fire station in MK when you enter. They give each player a pack of cards for free.

The set you see on the app is the only one Disney has sold that I am aware of. I’ve never seen one with just cards.

The gameboard and keycard sold in the booster packs have nothing to do with the in park game really. Definitely just wait and sign up at the Fire Station. They do a great job explaining the game and the cards are free. If the game/collecting cards ends up being something fun for your family, then just buy a booster pack or two in the gift shop. They contain a special lightningbolt card that can only be found in the booster packs (not in free packs). There are some great Facebook groups that can give you some insight into the game and connect you with local folks who trade/collect. Often members of 'SOTMK Helpers' will hide cards and post pictures on FB. Fun!

This seems kinda fun, wondering about this on our adult only trip in Sept.. Not to hijack the thread but do any adults play the game? How long does it last and does it really interfere with your park plans as far as rides and attractions?

I’m an adult that plays and I think it is fun. It’s self paced so you can play as much as you want and then go do something else and come back later (or the next day or the next trip). When you’re doing a mission, you are sent from portal to portal in the same land. When you’re done, it will send you to another land for the next mission. If you don’t remember where you’re supposed to be, you can open any portal and it will tell you where to go.

So the booster packs at the park, that you can buy, are they just the cards then? Wonder why it is not sold on the park app, only the $15 set with wakeboard.

No. I’ve only ever seen, in the parks and in the app, the larger set you mentioned earlier.

They only sell that set. If you have 4 or so people in your party, and they all sign on to play the same game (not 4 different games, but putting all 4 people on one game) you can easily get 40-50 different cards in two days, assuming you play enough to level up (all 4 check in two days, plus the extra set of packs for leveling up). And if you hang out around Tortuga Tavern (I think this is still the place) you should fine someone willing to trade any duplicates so you can get a large chunk of the base set for no cost. The booster packs are really needed only if you want to get the rare cards, which aren't inserted in the free packs. Any if you watch eBay, you might be able to pick them up for about the list cost of the pack.

And as a PP said, the home game has nothing to do with the in park game. And is really a shame, as there seems to be alot more potential than what they ended up delivering based on the information available on the cards. It's really easy to learn, especially the beginner level which consists of listening to Merlin, holding up the back of a card, holding up the front of a card, listening to Merlin, and winning. I think I left a step or two out, but there is no strategy involved in the easy level, and no one seems to have really cracked the strategy for the medium/hard levels, but apparently there is one as the game play does differ (you can use multiple cards, power cards up by using them but not to often, etc).

Plenty of adults play the game. How long it lasts and how much it interferes will really come down to you and how much you want to dedicate to it. I've had days where I just stopped in, played a portal or two and got my pack of cards. Maybe 10-15 minute of time tops, depends on how far away I was from the fire station to get my pack. I've had other days where I beat all the level, and started playing again on the next level, maybe 3-4 hours of play.

I don’t play but my kids do. You can play as much or as little as you want. How much it interferes with park plans probably depends on how addicted you get to games.
It’s a nice filler between other attractions The thing I think is most detracts from park time is the fact that you can’t pick your land. We mistakenly let our kids play separate games so of course one game was supposed to be on Main Street, the other in Adventureland. If the land it sends you to is not on your agenda for the day it loses its appeal as a filler between rides. But overall it’s pretty cool.
