Come join me, my friend, as we sit crooked and talk straight...

Any Murderinos out there?

No, just me. I'm OK with that.

First, let me introduce myself. I'm Kim. I'm in my mid-40s. I teach preschool for children with low incidence disabilities such as non-verbal autism and severe developmental delays. Most of my students don't talk yet, and one of the best parts of my job is hearing those first words. Until that happens (and just in case it doesn't), we use a lot of pictures to teach communication. So yeah... I sing and play all day and get paid to do it. I love my job.

39558027391_359480d054_z_d.jpg

Ah yes. That's me. School bathroom mirror selfie. I have been visiting Disney every 5-10 years or so since I was 5ish and my parents moved my sister and I to Florida, the land of everlasting sunshine. Except it didn't last forever because they were there for a year before they moved back to Kansas.

I married my husband when I was 20 and when I was 22, we went to Disneyland for a belated honeymoon. It was super fun. We stayed at the then Jolly Roger at the corner of Katella and Harbor, which I think is now gone. Maybe replaced by a Springhill Suites? Anyway, we were young and didn't mind the long walk to the parks and we took a bus tour to Tijuana and it was my husband's first vacation across the country. He'd been to Nebraska and Colorado on the only two vacations he took as a child. His parents were farmers. Vacations were pretty low on the list of things they did.

A couple years after our Disneyland trip, we started a family. We have 3 children. Our oldest son went to WDW before he turned a year old and is now applying to PhD programs so he can get a doctorate in Information Sciences. Yeah, not sure how we did that. Our middle is a senior at a state university, finishing up her last semester for her BSN (nursing). She's engaged and will be married in 2019.

And our baby girl is a senior in high school. When my oldest graduated from high school, we took the whole family to WDW for 2 weeks. When my middle graduated, we took the family to Wisconsin Dells for a week or so. My baby wants to go to Disneyland, so we're taking her to Disneyland a week after her graduation.

The other two weren't really invited. It's a LOT cheaper to just take one child to Disney.

So here we all are on Thanksgiving...

39558026511_6af79cc486_z_d.jpg

They're in age order, oldest on the left, middle in the middle, youngest on the right.

So I wanted to make this installment about me and there I go posting a picture of my family. (PS-- I'm holding Jake, our 2.5 year old dachshund. He's our baby.)

I am a frustrated writer. I had a blog for at least a decade, but let it go a couple years ago when it stopped bringing me joy and started feeling like a chore. I've written a couple of (really bad) romance novels since then, but lately I've been wanting to document my planning for this trip. And no blog, so I decided to start a PreTrip Report, which will probably become a dumping ground for every random thought I have in the next few months.

More about me -- I love true crime. The ID channel and My Favorite Murder podcast are my jams. I read. A lot. 200 books last year. I tend to alternate between reading a really deep thriller and a couple of fluffy romances that I can read in a day. But I pretty much read my day away. Get up in the morning, read while I eat breakfast, go to work, teach my AM class, read through lunch, teach my PM class, come home, make dinner, lose an hour on the internet, read until I fall asleep.

I'm a lapsed scrapbooker (first paper, then digital, then Project Life). I will likely do an album of our Disneyland trip. I scrapbooked faithfully from 2000-2015 and then I just stopped. Actually, I have all of 2016 done except December (when I had my gallbladder removed and spent the month high on opiods). I'm telling you this because documenting is pretty much in my blood. I documented every thing my family did for 15 years. Thus this need I have to tell our planning story, write a trip report, and some how get it all into an album so we have those memories.

39558026711_93c78fbb18_z_d.jpg

And that's one of my favorite photos of me at Disney. First, that shirt was a Large. I was at my lowest weight ever there. I'm probably 20 pounds over that right now. That gallbladder thing really helped me lose weight last year because it was more like 40. I'm also wearing my very favorite pair of shorts ever. I wore those things until they got so old and thin they ripped right up the rear. And Ches, my youngest, is probably 7 there and we had a very magical morning that day, complete with her opening the castle breakfast with a magic wand.

I'm an overorganized, over thinking planner. From the minute we booked this trip, I have been keeping a list in a very cute notebook of things I want to do, not to forget, what to pack, etc. I don't like surprises, so I sort of think of every possibility and plan for it.

I think that's pretty much me in a nutshell. I'm writing this for my own entertainment, but I'd be thrilled to have you read along. My rough plan right now is to introduce my fellow travelers, talk a little bit about how we ended up with this trip and the decisions we've made so far, and then update weekly with any changes to plans. I'm pretty much going to tell stories. It's what I do. I would love to have you read them.

And one final picture... this is us in 2009 at California Adventure. World of Color was being built at the time, so behind us in this picture is a bunch of dirt. But dang... we've really aged well.

Chapter Two: Caution: Crazy Disney Family Inside

We’re not really crazy.

Maybe just a little.

As I mentioned in my first chapter, my husband and I married young, and we are sliding towards 30 years of marriage in a few years. Which is crazy because in my mind, we’re still in our twenties and living in a small apartment, eating a baked potato for dinner because it’s cheap to buy 10 lbs of potatoes.

Anyway… Dan. That’s my husband. He’s late 40s (he’s two years older than me and I don’t let him forget) and he works for Schwan’s. He’s been there longer than anyone else in his depot and gets four weeks of vacation a year. He sort of doesn’t like his job too much, especially when it’s cold or rainy outside, but he’s not going to find another job that pays as much and offers the vacation time this one does. So he continues to work. He works 11 am to 8 pm, which is sort of not my teaching schedule and so we don’t see each other a whole lot during the week. Mostly we see each other in the mornings, when I’m still half awake and then rushing to work, and on the weekends. By the time he gets home most nights, I’m already half in bed.

25813080938_323a33d137_z_d.jpg

That's us last month. We went to visit Dan's parents and then spent an evening in the college town where we lived as newlyweds. It was a gorgeous night and they had a huge Christmas tree and it was just perfect.

But his job really doesn’t define him (certainly not in the way mine does me). He’s a kid at heart. He loves to play games, do things that are just fun for him, and is an obsessive TV/movie watcher. Pretty sure he doesn’t know what to do without a TV on. He likes the Chiefs and the Royals but yells at both of them whenever he watches them on TV. He’ll literally watch almost anything on TV but his favorites are Survivor, Shark Tank, Big Bang Theory. As far as movies, he really likes We’re the Millers and watches it so often it’s a family joke.

So he wants to go to Disney to ride the rides. When I think about going to the parks, that’s the smallest part of what I consider, but for him it’s the biggest part. We often go to Silver Dollar City (little theme park in Branson, MO) and I’ll sit on benches for hours, often with my Kindle, while my husband and daughters ride roller coaster after roller coaster. I’m just not a big ride person, and I’m not a thrill ride person. Dan wants to do it all.

27906797519_29448f2f4f_z_d.jpg

This is from our Wisconsin Dells trip in 2015. We went to the Deer Park which is like the best idea ever. Just a bunch of deer roaming free while you walk around and then, of course, you can feed them. For my animal loving family it was a perfect day.

And finally, there’s Chesney. She’s turning eighteen this weekend. She’s my youngest and the one child who has always believed in magic. She went to WDW for the first time when she was 11 months old, and I have always loved to see the parks through her eyes. She has been a huge Stitch for as long as I can remember and more recently has developed a love for The Princess and the Frog. Some of my best memories are of her interacting with characters at the parks. She just goes in with complete belief in magic.

27906797149_16f2dbee0b_z_d.jpg

Ches with Stitch over the years.

She is also a rider, but in the past she’s been a little hesitant to do the big thrill rides at Disney. For example, she skipped Tower of Terror back when she was 12. I think that’s mostly gone and she’ll try anything once, but she’s not as much wanting to ride the rides as she wants to be a part of the magic.

25813080048_54ea2dd903_z_d.jpg

A little birthday collage I made for her.

Ches is a theater tech girl and she loves all the behind the scenes stuff. She’s going to college in the fall with the goal of being a teacher and really wants to do a semester in the Disney College Program. Since she took quite a few college classes in high school, that would work quite well with the program her college has because they run the teaching classes starting in the fall but she’ll have all her necessary prereqs in the spring of her sophomore year. So we’ll see.

She’s pretty great. An introvert like her mom and needs some quiet time. It’s going to be interesting to see how we balance our need for quiet while we’re in the parks. I get mine now over lunch, and she gets home from school a couple hours before anyone else, but we won’t have the luxury of just shutting people out while we’re on vacation. Did I mention we’re just getting one hotel room, too? No escaping into a bedroom and shutting the door.

27906796199_08a2b1289e_z_d.jpg

This is my favorite of her senior pictures. Mostly because it offers a glimpse into her personality and the things she loves.

Ches is pretty much my co-planner. I’ll read a trip report or see something on a message board and get an idea, then I’ll bounce it off her. Dan doesn’t want to read anything and trusts me to do the planning. For the most part. I mean… he’s going to ask how much something costs but by the time I sit him down at the World of Color dessert party, it’s going to be a little late to be asking how much it costs, now isn’t it?

For me the biggest change in planning this trip vs. every other trip I’ve planned is that we’re a party of three adults. Our last trip was six years ago, and we had 2 teens and a 12 year old. Even that is different than saying we’re two adults plus our eighteen year old daughter. Long gone are the days when we had to question if we needed a stroller or worry about Ches taking a nap in strange places (she can sleep anywhere and through anything). The three of us have been going on trips without the other kids for a good four years so we’ve kind of gotten into a groove. There’s a lot of times I let the two of them go and do something together while I sit and read, and it just works for us. I’m interested to see what that will look like at Disney.

Chapter Three: Where It All Began

We usually start talking about our next vacation sometime during a current vacation. It’s pretty much just me, Dan and Ches on vacation any more.

Last year we did a little hodge podge, mostly staying close to home. Spring Break was a few days in the Branson area. We went to Kansas City in June to see Ed Sheeran in concert.

28018417359_9b2bf984e9_z_d.jpg

OK. We had floor seats but not the best view. Two really tall men stood right in front of me. Then they left and I switched with my husband and the lady that had been beside him the whole concert decided to start dancing with me. Excuse me? Do I look like the type who dances with a stranger at a concert? All kinds of awkward.

Went back to Branson for a few days in July. On our way there -- which was really not at all on the way -- we went to Tulsa, OK and visited the aquarium and stayed at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. Didn’t gamble once, just laid around the really amazing pool.

I would say most of our trips in the last few years have been to Branson. We have some places we like to stay there, have a good friend in the area, and it’s just comfortable and where we end up going. In fact, we have a week booked for Spring Break this year.

But graduations in our family seem to demand a little more than what’s comfortable so I kind of left this year’s trip up to Ches. As I said in Chapter 1, we went to WDW/Universal for my son’s high school graduation and then to Wisconsin Dells for a week for my middle daughter’s.

This year, WDW and Disneyland were almost the same price since there’s only three of us and we could stay at a value at WDW. No matter where we went, the plan was to drive because I’m a nervous flyer and we have fun on road trips with the three of us. So Wisconsin Dells was also in the mix as was Las Vegas, mostly because we watch a LOT of cooking shows and I knew if we went to Vegas, we could find a lot of “celeb chef” restaurants to try.

In the end, she wanted Disneyland. Our last trip to California was when she was nine and she doesn’t have a lot of memories of it. So it was decided. California. Five day hoppers because we hopped like crazy in 2009.

I’m not one who will pay a premium to stay on site at DL, so it was mostly a decision between Harbor hotels. We did HoJo last trip and we stayed in Building One, on the top floor and had a great view of the parks. The kids loved that hotel, maybe more than any place we’ve stayed before or after.

38898039855_af985179a8_z_d.jpg

However, I wanted to do a Walt Disney Travel package and with that, you can only book a 2 double room at HoJo. Dan and I cannot sleep in a double without risking our marriage. I’m guessing you can upgrade somehow, but that seemed like more work than I wanted to do.

We have actually stayed at the Fairfield Anaheim way back in 1998 and Fairfield is my hotel of choice lately when we’re travelling, so that was our choice this time. There’s a quality standard at Fairfield I like, and I also like that they offer foam pillows instead of feather. Like… don’t get me started on pillows. I have serious pillow issues. To be honest, I’ve already looked at pictures of our hotel room and calculated how many pillows each of us can have.

I also love that there’s a Panera right in front, plus a Pizza Hut express in the the hotel (that delivers!) and a McDonalds nearby. I predict we’ll stop for meals on the way back to the room sometimes. I mean… have you had Panera mac and cheese? (And yes, I know it comes frozen. Middle dd worked there. I just do not care.)

I booked a package because I wanted to be able to make payments on it. I have a fairly large Teachers Pay Teachers store, and I’ve just made a payment on the package every time I get a payout from TPT. It’s been paid off since before Christmas. So that’s nice. I know it’s more expensive as a package than I could do on my own, but it worked for our financial situation plus I booked through a travel agent friend so she’ll make some money off it.

Somewhere around when Southwest released flights for May, we also decided to fly. I hate flying. Even worse, I let Dan talk me into taking connecting flights from our local airport. Every trip since the “great missed-connection trip of 2000”, we’ve driven up to KC and taken a direct flight. So not only do I have general anxiety about flying, but now we’ve gone and thrown a connection into the mix.

Originally I booked Wichita to LAX and return flights, but I never really wanted to fly into LAX. It was just more expensive to fly anywhere else. Then Southwest had a fare sale and I found equivalent flights into Orange County and switched to those. At least flying into Orange County gives me less anxiety than the idea of flying into LAX.

And why Southwest? Because they never change their flight schedules, right?

Except…. In that week between Christmas and New Year’s I was trying to book a flight for my son to a conference in Atlanta (same week we’re going to CA) and realized in checking our account that Southwest had cancelled our return flight from Orange County to Las Vegas and now had us booked on a OC to San Francisco to Las Vegas to Wichita flight.

Yeah, I’m not doing that.

I called Southwest and we’re now connecting through Phoenix, which is our connection on the way out, and life is good.

I still think I’m going to try to get some Xanax when I go to the doctor next month.

Assuming we survive the flights to Anaheim, I also had to switch our flight days to get the better fare so now we have a full week in California and five day hoppers. I’m not planning to go to the parks on arrival day (due to my fear of missing a connecting flight, I won’t plan anything for arrival day) and now on departure day we have to be at the airport at 7 am, but that still leaves us with a full day free.

Dan’s big plan for this “free” day is to go see a movie, but I’m not sure when the AMC theaters in downtown Disney will be closing. Does Garden Walk have theaters? Is there even a movie that will be out in May that I’ll want to see?

I don’t anticipate a pool day, mostly because hanging out at the pool is less exciting the older your kids get. Ches and I will want to sleep in -- and I may drug Dan so we get to do that -- but I suspect we’ll need something more to do than sleep that day.

So the rough plan is:

Saturday -- fly into California.

Sunday, Monday, Tuesday -- park days. Tuesday is a grad night so we’ll be in Disneyland at the end of that day. We also plan to use our magic morning on Tuesday.

Wednesday -- day off. Also a grad night.

Thursday, Friday -- park days.

Saturday -- fly home

I would still like to schedule a World of Color dessert party and possibly a Fantasmic Dining Package (will likely depend on what nights it’s running). I’m not sure on the timing of those. Maybe Monday night for WOC? Not sure about the WOC night and MM the next morning, but Dan and I are generally morning people. I mean… I’ll sleep in on a weekend, but on a weekday I am up and one of the first people at work. Ches has to get up super early for school (like 5:45 am central) but if left alone, she’d sleep till mid-morning. I may have to buy some bottled Coke for her to drink on the way to the park a couple days. She’s her momma’s girl and likes a good, cold pop. Unfortunately for her momma, my gallbladder put an end to my 3-4 cans of pop per day habit. It’s iced tea and water for me.

The other thing I want to fit in is a character meal, likely a breakfast. The easy answer here is to do Surf’s Up on our off day and schedule it later in the morning so it’s more like brunch. I mean… Stitch is Chesney’s favorite so that’s a no brainer. Plus, it would give us something to do on our day off that would take up a good chunk of time.

28018416649_73305c0d40_z_d.jpg

This is from Surf's Up on our last trip. We had arrived just as Stitch went to take a break. We mentioned to our server that he was Chesney's favorite and then ate our meal, met the rest of the characters, and wasted time. When Stitch finally came back out, he came right to our table and spent at least 20 minutes with us. It was great.

Any thoughts on our plans? Ideas for our day off? We won’t have a car because I’m not letting Dan drive in California, but we can use uber if needed.

38898039325_ce5420392a_z_d.jpg

One of those magical moments... as we left Paradise Pier to walk back to the parks, Lilo was looking out the window, saw us and remembered us and gave us a little "hang loose."

Sounds like a great plan!
Maybe on your day off you could visit a beach? It would go along with your Surf's Up breakfast. You could watch some California surfer dudes.

Joining in! Looks like you have such a fun trip planned. That's so annoying about the connecting flights. I'm not a nervous flyer, but I've always avoided connecting flights because switching gates would just make me so stressed out. Hope it isn't too too bad for you. Jealous you get to go to Disney in May, I would've always loved to go then cuz my birthday's in May. Can't wait to hear about the rest of your plans once you've got everything settled. :mickeyjum

We always have a day off property. One time we went to San Diego. Once we did lunch at the Original Farmer's Market, the Tar Pits, and then a movie at El Capitan (they were showing Nightmare Before Christmas 4D). Last May we did the Petersen Automotive Museum - I am not a car person and still thought it was pretty impressive and educational - and lunch at the Farmer's Market (love that place!). This May I am hoping we finally make it to Griffith Park and see the carousel and the observatory (with lunch at the Farmer's Market ;) ). There is also the hop on-hop off-bus that takes you everywhere, I am just starting to check for fun things to do on our non-Disney days (might be 2 days this trip!).

We're considering a beach. Huntington, maybe? I am so out of my depth in California and the idea of striking out on our own makes me more than a little anxious, but Huntington seems like a place where we could have uber drop us off, explore, have a meal, and then uber back to our hotel.

The connecting flights thing makes me so nervous. I'm already looking at maps of the Phoenix airport. We have 2 hours between flights on the way out so I think that's plenty of time. My son flew into Phoenix on Southwest last year and the plane took off slightly delayed but I think they still landed on time, so hoping we get the same luck.

Funny story... when Dan and I went to CA in 1992, we went to the Farmer's Market on a tour thing. That night, we both had the worst food poisoning. We had only eaten at Farmer's Market that day, so it was pretty easy to place blame. Pretty sure that even though that was 25 years ago, I still couldn't get Dan there. He has a long memory. I will look at the El Capitan though. That would be fun!

Following along! I am a memory-keeper too (digital scrapbooking, family video editing, and I used to blog faithfully, back when people read blogs...) and I'm excited to see how your fun vacation goes! I am thinking of going sometime in May with the family sometime in the next few years, and I'm curious how it is these days. Growing up, we almost always went in May! (I live in AZ)

Hi! Yeah, I'm very much a lapsed memory keeper at the moment, but I know somehow I'll have to document this trip. I'm hoping May is perfect. We went in June 9 years ago and it was almost too cold for my husband but I loved it. Hoping it's the same this trip.

You had me at "murderinos"!

I love My Favorite Murder, but now Georgia has me listening to Atlanta Monster. And Last Podcast on the Left is doing a Jim Jones series that's got me hooked...

OK, onto Chapter 3...

Chapter 4: I’ve Got the Magic On Me

First, I love Pitch Perfect. The original. There is no better moment in a movie than when the Treble Makers are singing in the finale and they step aside and Ben Platt steps forward and sings “I’ve Got the Magic In Me.”

39927305281_7a5bdd0f2b_o_d.jpg

It is cinematic perfection.

And Ben Platt. I want to adopt him. And sing songs from Dear Evan Hansen together.

OK, but this chapter is not supposed to be about my taste in movies.

It’s supposed to be about my shopping habit. (And thus… wearing the magic *on* me.) You see, when I book a Disney trip, I immediately start shopping for it.

39927431641_3dda221ea8_z_d.jpg

Cannot wait to wear this outfit. Small World leggings from Wishes and Wands (Etsy) and t-shirt from Blush Gold Press (independent shop)

Etsy. It’s a minefield for anyone remotely interested in Disney.

I also started out my planning for this trip by listening to an episode of Capturing Magic podcast -- hosted by my long time friend Steph -- and it was all about Disney shopping and got me addicted.

I started with Mickey Ears.

39927362061_c8ee5c9b0f_z_d.jpg

This was hat day at work. My retro Minnie ears are from Kutie Bow Tuties.

And then I needed shirts to go with the Mickey Ears.

39927358131_253eb6c952_z_d.jpg

T-shirt from Polka Dot Pixel Shop and Ears are a custom order from The Champagne Mouse (purchased for Ches)

And then I needed hair bows. For me. I rock a good retro hair bow.

39029048505_7eea57992c_z_d.jpg

Hair bow by Rarity by Casey and shirt is also from Polka Dot Pixel Shop. P.S. Santa is real.

And leggings. And maybe a pin. Even though I don’t collect pins. Oh, and a Vera Bradley bag for me. And then new luggage.

OK, we needed the luggage. We used huge rolling duffels on our last trip and they’re way too big and bulky for what we need now.

And shoes. And Bombas (those are socks). And a backpack for Ches (Christmas gift, so that’s reasonable, right?).

I’m a serious shopper.

I have a little bookcase in my (long ignored) craft area and the top two shelves are just stuff for our trip. It's one of my happy places at the moment. I'm really trying to buy stuff we'll use again (like good socks and bags) and stuff that makes me happy/brings me joy. Ches and I... we'll wear Disney stuff any time, any place. And what girl can't always use a pair of sparkly glitter athletic shoes?

25056253067_9df681c9d2_z_d.jpg

PS Dan says he won't go to the parks with me if I wear these shoes (rose gold). He doesn't even know about the pair I bought Ches. And my spare.

Following along! Loving all the Disney outfits and accessories. Isn't Etsy the best?!

We might be the same person because I love Ben Platt (unfortunately I had to relinquish my future husbandship to him to one of my besties because I steal all the other men oops) and Pitch Perfect. They are my jam... my lady jam. So glad there's someone else on these boards who finds them relevant.

All your Etsy purchases are amazing. I especially love that Tiana flower crown ears and shirt ensemble. Gonna make note to get those even though I kinda want pink flower crown ears so I can Disneybound as her gal pal Lottie aka my spirit animal. Oh, you going to be serving some lewks this trip, I'm not ready!

Disneyland Murderinos unite! Following! I can't wait. My trip is in July, so our planning/dreaming/counting the days coincides a little as we build up to summer 2018.

Wow. I didn't know I needed glittery shoes until now. I gotta find some for men!
