One advice is stay sober... Seriously.. bad things happen to good people doing stupid things in shaddy foreign countries.. Friend of mine couldn't pay his tab in Thailand at some shaddy bar... Russian run "Mafia" bouncers got their "cash" Friend didnt have a iphone anymore.
You definetely don't want to do something stupid and end up in a Mexican jail. You may never get out.

People don't care what goes what goes on in Mexico.

Except all the people on this thread. And many many people around the world. It’s easy to see things through an American filter when you’re American, but travel a bit and watch their local news, or take a peek at the BBC World news if you get that channel at home, and see all that they talk about

I was speaking more to international news.

Oh I bet intl news available outside of the US pays attention.

Right?!

How many people can name the pres of Mexico without googling it. How many people know the states in Mexico.
I'm guessing not too many.

The only reason people on these boards care is because their worried about how dangerous it might be.

I watched international news every night the month I spent in Europe. I can't say I recall much coverage on Mexico. Unless there was a soccer match going on ...I'll give them that.

You have commented several time on these board on how much you hate the United States. Yet you tell me not to look at things through an "American filter" when I'm pretty sure you know from my posts how much traveling outside the US that I have done. There are people that are "well traveled" that have a great appreciation for the great country we live in. I have no grudge against Mexico. I've spent a great deal of time there, but it is what it ...a 2nd world country with beautiful beaches.

I'll. LOL right back at ya.

Probably isn't as great of odds as I would like... :scared:

- Of course there is crime around my city, but last I checked, no one had been be-headed or strung up above a freeway. :sad2:
Actually many years ago, someone went to trader sams and lost a head. Well. It met an end of an ax. That happened in the USA. Murder happens everywhere. As long as you are aware of surroundings. You are good to go.

I would say that if you stick to an excursion booked with the cruise line, you're as safe as you can be. If you don't feel safe even with an excursion, maybe it would be better to book another itinerary.

You are supposed to go on vacation to relax, after all... :)

You are right about that. That was going to be my next question. What excursions are recommended for these ports, based upon the ongoing issues?

I spend at least one week a month in a Mexican border town with production facilities. I spend at least a weekend a month downtown Chicago with our family.

My feeling about both are the same, I've really never felt uncomfortable in the slightest, but I use awareness if in areas that aren't well defined. If I was slightly nervous, I'd stick to excursions through Disney, but really don't see much reason to worry.

I was just talking to a coworker that returned from 2 weeks in Cancun. They had no trouble until they got pulled over by the police because one of them wasn't wearing a seatbelt. The police wanted 200.00 dollars. They didn't have it. The police asked them how much they had. They had 80.00 dollars on them. The police took that and thankfully let them go on their way. That's an example of they operate down there.

I’m new to the DIS Boards so maybe I shouldn’t be commenting on such a hot topic until I’ve been here a bit longer, but I feel compelled. I handle Kidnap & Ransom insurance for a large insurance company, and I can tell you that the majority of kidnappings of Americans for ransom (and extortion) take place in Mexico. For tourists, there has been a huge increase in what’s called express kidnapping or a millionaire tour, when a victim is held for a few days and forced to take the max limit out at ATM machines essential paying their own ransom. We’re also seeing an increase in virtual kidnapping, but that’s more for tourists staying in hotels, not on cruise ships. Having said all that, the chances of something happening to you are still relatively low especially if you stay in the popular tourist areas, but you are at a greater risk in Mexico, which is why I picked the Eastern route for my family’s cruise! Now watch me get kidnapped on St. Thomas!

There are some really scary people out there! Thanks for posting that. I'd never heard of virtual kidnapping and I could see my family falling for that if we were traveling.

I do have to say that when we discussed Eastern or Western, my DH brought up dangers in Mexico, too. We chose Eastern, but also, it worked for the week we had off.

I am just finishing up a week at my company's facility in Cuernavaca (about 50 miles south of Mexico City), and I have felt completely safe the entire time. The people I've met are warm, friendly, and welcoming. Not saying you shouldn't use common sense and keep a sense of vulnerability and awareness...but the idea that the people are just waiting to swallow up gringos down here is absurd. Be friendly, show respect, and 999,999 times out of a million you'll be just fine.

I am not belittling anyone's concerns, but since we are talking about statistics and likelihoods, I want to point out that the most dangerous part of your cruise, according to probabilities, is the drive to the airport, or for that matter every day when you get into your car, but none of us decline to do that because of the risk. All of these other risks are much smaller by comparison. Remember too, something like 40% of Americans die of Heart Disease eventually so it doesn't do us much good to worry even about auto safety if we aren't keeping our hearts healthy.

Sorry if that sounds negative. I mean it to be positive. Take small steps everyday to improve heart health (eat a little less, walk a little more, sleep more, drink and smoke less) and you will have done more for your health than any of the things we worry about daily.
