How the Dis unplugged saved me!!!

The title sounds a little dramatic, and I suppose it is, but let me explain.

The story begins about 10 years ago when after 13 years My wife and I decided it was time to marry. We re-mortgaged our house as we had quite a lot of equity in it and planned a rather low cost wedding as we wanted to spend more on the Honeymoon; after much thought and considering we had never been on holiday as a family we decided to make it a family honeymoon and would take my 16 year old Step son, 9 year old and 3 year old daughters.

Living in the UK we then had to decide on a location, and My wife suggested Walt Disney world Florida. To be honest I had reservations; not sure exactly what, but was hoping for something a little more grown up I guess. Anyway after lots of conversations I decided to go along with the idea and started to do a little research into the holiday, the more research I did the more I started to get a good feeling for the holiday.

Finally in August of 2008 we flew to Orlando. As we were still on a bit of a budget I booked to stay on international drive and hire a car hire for our two week vacation. We stayed in a suite and had two bedrooms, two bathrooms and lounge/ Kitchen, to be honest it suited us down to the ground. Over the two weeks we crammed as much as we could into the holiday, Magic Kingdom, MGM, Animal Kingdom, Epcot, Universal, IOA, Sea world, Blizzard Beach, Aquatica, Bush Gardens, and of course shopping and eating out every night. The holiday was fantastic and for someone who didn't really want to go I felt like a big kid again; I still to this day can remember the feeling on walking on Main st USA for the first time.

On return from the Honeymoon, The wife and I couldn't get over how great the holiday was and we decided that we had to return, and set a 6 year time span in order for us to save. And in August 2014 we returned for our second adventure to Walt Disney world. My daughters were now 15 and 9 years old and it was great for the 9 year old as she didn't have much memory of our first visit. Again we choose to stay off site and managed to find the Holiday Inn near Universal. The Hotel what it is, and considering we were only sleeping there it was ideal, it was also only a 15 min walk to Universal so that was an added bonus, and to top it off it had TGI's on site ideal for a few beers after the Parks. Again we had another packed itinerary and did all the parks we did the first time, apart from Busch Gardens and Sea world. It's amazing that in only 6 years the parks had changed so much, with the addition of Harry Potter being the biggest inclusion.

This is really now where the title to this topic begins. On returning from our second visit to WDW, we knew deep down that it was possibly the last :( The cost, The kids ages are a big factor. For weeks after returning I tried to keep the feeling alive and this is when I stumble on too the DIS on You tube. I was looking for a fix, and I found it nearly 4 years ago with the Dis unplugged weekly show. This will sound a bit weird but it's the truth. Once a week I have a bath (I do shower on all the other days). but I run a nice hot bath take in my tablet and a watch the weekly DIS update, I am always a week behind but this 1 hour brings me up to date on all what's happening in WDW and Universal and also gives me a sense that I am back there with you all. It's a fantastic hour which I look forward to every week and love the interaction between Pete and all the others on the show.

I appreciate this has been a long way around of telling why the Dis has saved me. But it's the truth!! maybe I will return, I would love to think I would one day be sat in one of the parks soaking up the atmosphere only time will tell. But in the mean time I would to thank Pete, Rhino, Craig, John, Kevin, Kathy, Julie and all the others for bringing Disney to me once a week, its very appreciated.

love

@Neil73 - Your post made me smile, and I agree with the huge thanx owed to all members of (both coasts's)Teams (I do sometimes enviously watch the DL content, hoping for a "someday" return there - haven't been since I moved from Long Beach, CA in the 80's!). They bring me so much information, and just countless hours of pure joy - laughing with the banter, and reliving great memories.

For somebody that used to go every year during the 90's and early 2000's (sometimes blessed to go TWICE in a year!), and now not having been able to go for over 5 years (BOOOOOOO!!!), it is my "WDW Fix". Plus I see the Team as friends I just haven't been lucky enough to meet (and hug) yet, not "just some podcast people". Enjoy a lot of the other content, but the Tuesday show specifically is my "Window on the World". :)

Thanks for the great post. My wife and I are lucky to make several trips to WDW each year as we are DVC members. That being said we love getting our Disney fix each week by watching the live show. It is one of our must do shows every week.

totally agree - as I'm from the UK as well and the DIS shows and these boards are a great link to the World, in-between trips.

Although I normally start planning my next trip as soon as I return, even if it's a couple of years out as it gives me something to do and save for :thumbsup2

I know, @k8Davies - I MISS doing that - always used to make it a bit easier to leave the World, and the time a bit shorter in between, when I knew when the "next trip" was - no matter HOW far away that was! I find that, generally, in life, it makes my mental state better if I have something positive "in the works" - helps me stay focused on the future, not mired in the past, or rutted in the present. :)

Definitely as I need something to look forward, I become a bit depressed if nothing fun is on the horizon.

Although this trip I'm actually quiet lucky, as I'm going in January (planning that trip since 2016 after my last trip) and my mum announced, over Christmas, that she wants to go for her 70 Birthday.

Meaning my next trip will be November 2019 - so even though it will be over 20 mths away (enough time to save, I hope) I can still say I'm going back again next year - which will definitely make coming back home easier.
