Get yer lugs on we're going to Disney - July 16 TR (update 8/11) Football and Chili's

You see it's not just sheep or cows that have time to stand and stare.

I'd feel sheepish if caught staring.

Shops here tend to only allow guide dogs but there are a number of dog friendly cafes springing up.

Ah.
I remember being in Germany when I was younger and being amazed that there was a basset hound sleeping in an aisle in a department store.

No it was quite a sensory overload - he did well considering. I did check there was no little dogs in before we went in.

Would've been trouble?

Yes, it seems you Alfie and Andy would find it difficult.

::yes::

Or possibly pheasant? We had fun the other morning when a squirrel ran across our path in the dark.

Sure! Let's go with pheasant.

Thanks! These are the things I notice when I take the time to stand and stare!

And that's the trick, isn't it?

I love Indian cuisine. We have some great indian restaurants. I love Chicken tikka where the chicken breast is marinated in a tikka sauce and then cooked in a Tandoor. The chicken is tender and lightly charred. Indian food is probably the most popular food in Scotland. Hopefully you'll get a chance to try it some day soon.

Sounds yummy!
I'm hoping soon, actually.

That is the good thing with Scotland it is pretty compact. Although it can be hard to see a lot of it easily without a car. I think that is the case in lots of countries.

Canada is not quite so compact.

If you don't manage next year you can always come another year! Would you visit some other parts of Scotland next time?

This trip would land in Glasgow but go to the borders down by Hadrian's Wall into England and then up to Edinburgh for the Tattoo. I would love to do it but my mom's health will also factor into the decision.

That's interesting that relatives can go as chaperones. Our school trips only have school staff on them. Have you been to Italy before?

There would be to many children going and my granddaughter is very clingy if you know what I mean. She would have a hard time being there without her mom or me along. I have never been to Italy but it is on my Bucket List.

I always find bacon distracting too.

That's understandable - the smell of bacon is so good!

Definitely a lovely area to go for a walk.

It was really good - we have lots of areas like that on our doorstep but it was nice to have a bit more time to enjoy it!

Always nice to drive some different roads to see the scenery!

You get a bit fed up on Motorways and A roads when you can find some nice, twisty country roads for a more interesting drive.

Looks like it was a nice, relaxing getaway for you!

It was just what we needed to slow down the pace a bit.

I'd feel sheepish if caught staring.

Well you know the answer to that... don't get caught!

I remember being in Germany when I was younger and being amazed that there was a basset hound sleeping in an aisle in a department store.

I wonder if it belonged to the owner or one of the staff. There used to be such a thing as 'the store dug' in Scotland where in small shops you might find a dog asleep in the corner. In fact sometimes it is still used as an expression when someone is considered lazy i.e. " Stop lying about like a store dug!"

Would've been trouble?

It might not have lent itself well to a relaxed dining experience.

Sounds yummy!
I'm hoping soon, actually

Enjoy! Let us know how you get on!

Canada is not quite so compact.

I noticed that! I remember some drives not looking too bad on the map but then the road seemed to go on forever.

Well you know the answer to that... don't get caught!

Baa... where's the fun in that?

;)

I wonder if it belonged to the owner or one of the staff.

Nope. Customer.

Huh! I like that!

It might not have lent itself well to a relaxed dining experience.

Perhaps not.

Uh, huh.

There would be to many children going and my granddaughter is very clingy if you know what I mean. She would have a hard time being there without her mom or me along.

That's nice if it helps her - my two would die off if I went anywhere near a school trip! What age is your granddaughter?

I have never been to Italy but it is on my Bucket List.

Italy is a really interesting place. Some of the tourist spots get very crowded. I really liked Florence.

Leisa had commented that coasteering looked fun but cold. I wasn't sure how cold it felt and said I would need to ask Peter. As it happens last week Peter had to write a short report for school on his trip to Raasay. It just so happens to be saved on the PC and it answers that all important question on just how cold it was. Enjoy!

The Raasay Experience

I recently went to a small Scottish island called Raasay with school. We left school on a Saturday morning and came back on the following Wednesday evening. We went in two groups, based on our houses. I was in Group 2 (Arthur and Morrison). Raasay is a tiny island just off the Isle of Skye. It was a great opportunity to get away from technology and just enjoy spending time with friends and having loads of fun.

To be perfectly honest, the journey to Raasay was extremely boring and also extremely long. The picturesque scenery was absolutely breathtaking, however. It took approximately 7 hours to get there but it was well worth it in the end. We travelled from Glasgow to Tyndrum, where we had a short period of time at the Green Welly Stop. We then got back on the bus and made our way to Fort William. Despite not even being 11 o’clock, food was much needed at this time. After this, we proceeded on to Sconser where we got the ferry to Raasay. Although I, and many other people, were somewhat fatigued after this long journey, spirits were high as we were all eager to start our activities.

Over the course of the week there were countless great experiences with my friends but one definitely stood out. This was on the Tuesday morning when we went coasteering. This activity involved us jumping off loads of rocks into the ocean. These jumps varied in height but the one thing they all had in common was that they made for great laughs. One downside was that it was extremely easy to get a mouthful of water and obviously when it is that salty it doesn’t taste particularly good. Some effort did have to be put in due to us having to swim at some points through choppy waters. Although this was quite difficult, I was undeniably in my element due to swimming competitively and training regularly. The activity culminated in a jump off the pier into the numbingly cold water below. Every time that I hit the water, I felt a sudden shock to my system as I gasped for air, as if it were to be my final breath. It really was that cold!

As the trip was so good, it is difficult to talk about a worst moment. As cheesy as it may sound, the worst experience was probably going home. This is due to the amount of fun that I had in Raasay, whether I was doing an activity or hanging out with my friends. The journey home was just the same as the journey there (except in reverse) but with a lot less excitement. At least on the way to Raasay, I could look forward to the activities and everything else but this wasn’t the case for the way back. One thing that made the journey a bit better was that I slept for about 2 hours. This passed the time pretty well. The fact that this was the worst experience just goes to show how good the trip really was.

I think that I have gained quite a lot from this trip. First and foremost I had loads of fun and got to do some pretty cool things. There is no denying that I also formed closer friendships while on the trip. I would recommend the trip as I had great fun and grew friendships. I would probably go again if I my friends were going as that is probably what makes the trip so fun. All in all, I had a really fun time at Raasay and would recommend it.

Thanks to Peter for the trip report. I have to say it must be one of the most scenic spots for a game of football with your friends

That's nice if it helps her - my two would die off if I went anywhere near a school trip! What age is your granddaughter?

My granddaughter is just turning 9 so still at that age where she needs someone. It won't be long til she won't need me at all so I cherish this time with her.

Italy is a really interesting place. Some of the tourist spots get very crowded. I really liked Florence.

The school they are pen pals with is just outside Rome so that would be where we will stay. We only need pay for airfare as we will stay with families so it would be an interesting trip.

Green Welly Stop and Fort William brought back memories of my trip. It's nice to put a mental picture to names mentioned.

If you get the chance stop by my new trip report. It's in the early stages but will have some trips past from when my children were babies. It's called 21 people, 2 ECV's, 3 strollers - my dream trip.

You are incorrigible!

No, ewe are.

Yes we're certainly compact and you are definitely not! I've only scratched the surface of Canada. Do you ever meet people and they find out you're Canadian and ask if you know this random person from Canada?

There's a comedian who does a schtick about that.
"You're from Canada? Do you know Bob? He works in an office?"
"Office Bob? Yeah, I know him. He's dead."

I did! Thanks! And thanks to Peter, too!

A couple of comments...

To be perfectly honest, the journey to Raasay was extremely boring and also extremely long. The picturesque scenery was absolutely breathtaking, however.

This is hilarious. It so captures today's youth. "Boring!!! But breathtaking!"

:lmao:

As cheesy as it may sound, the worst experience was probably going home.

Awwwww...

Peter did great on his trip report. I makes me want to go there. I would pass on the actual coasteering, not much for extra cold water.

Sounds good - if you do go ahead with this you should add on some days in Glasgow at the start or end of your trip. It is difficult to predict with parents how things will be so far ahead. There are also lots of tour companies here if you decide to book separately from flight.

The school they are pen pals with is just outside Rome so that would be where we will stay. We only need pay for airfare as we will stay with families so it would be an interesting trip.

That will certainly keep down the costs!

Of course you will have visited these spots!

I had missed the fact you had started your new trip report- I am all caught up now.

 I've had occasions where people seem quite annoyed when I don't know their ancestors. Usually they can't give me any details except they are from Scotland. We had a funny one a few years ago when on a visit to Salzburg. We got chatting to this older Irish couple who asked where we were from - when we told them they kept saying "No, no you're not!" There was no convincing them ...Ok then you win we're not!

I did! Thanks! And thanks to Peter, too!

Glad you enjoyed it! Might as well put his homework to good use.

:lmao:

Absolutely! It reminds me of Hannah refusing to get out the car on the road to Banff. "It's just another lake and mountain!"

Awwwww...

What do you mean Awww? He said the worst experience was going home - we don't mistreat him (honest)!

I knew someone like that.
One fellow was relating a story when she piped up "No they didn't."
He paused and...

"No. They did. I was there. I saw it."
"No you never."
"No. It was me. I was there. I saw it with my own eyes."
"No you didn't."

He just stood there kind of dumbfounded for a while. Finally shrugged and said. "Okay. I guess I wasn't there when I was there."

Glad you enjoyed it! Might as well put his homework to good use.

::yes::

Now don't go misunderstanding me.
He loved his trip so much that even the excitement of going home again paled in comparison to the fun he had.

Stealing your kid's work? Nice! :rotfl2:

I'd say that clearly answers the question... I don't like cold water. Doesn't sound like it is something for me! :rotfl:

Nice trip report by Peter! He's an expressive but concise writer! Sounds like he had a wonderful time

Maybe I could persuade him to complete this trip report. It would be over much quicker. "I couldn't single out a favourite part of the trip - I loved everything and my least favourite part was coming home".

Peter did great on his trip report.
Thanks!

I makes me want to go there.

I haven't been to Raasay either but it looks lovely. There were quite a lot of tourists staying at the hotel when they were there.

I would pass on the actual coasteering, not much for extra cold water.

It must have been really cold water for Peter to mention it! They did do other activities including archery, sailing, abseiling, hiking kayaking and crating but coasteering was clearly his favourite.

AWwww, thanks for remembering that I was curious! :)

the Green Welly Stop

This sounds intriguing! What a fun name for a stop? Shop? Place? What is this?!

These jumps varied in height but the one thing they all had in common was that they made for great laughs.

This is just so great. I love to see people having high adventure and having so much fun at it!

Some effort did have to be put in due to us having to swim at some points through choppy waters.

I know JUST how fatiguing that is! As you'll see in my next update...

There is no denying that I also formed closer friendships while on the trip.

Nice!! This alone makes it all worth it!

I noticed that too.
I thought that it was some sort of outdoor gear place that also (of course) sold Wellingtons.
Of course... maybe that's all they sold.
