The Do and Don't of Room Service

I read in an unofficial guide that you can get rice crispy mickey's through room service even though they aren't on the menu. Can anyone verify this? Or refute?
We called a year or so ago and they said they didnt have them. Then a couple of days later, they left a couple as a surprise in our room.

Here's a link to the room service menu for anyone who needs it...

Oh no.....I spy Key Lime Pie on that menu now. If it's any good I'm in trouble. I love Key Lime Pie and rarely make it or buy one. Why? Cuz I can eat 1/2 a pie in one sittlng.

My kids love to order room service after they have come back for the night from Edge. DCL rolls up their sidewalks too early when it comes to late night eats so room service it is. They usually order chicken tenders, a burger or a mickey bar.

All Hands on Deck cheese plate and a glass of wine (we bring a box of Trader Joe's....ain't fancy, but good enough for me) is one of the things I most look forward to on DCL. This is our go-to getting-ready-for-dinner snack. I love to let my hair dry in the breeze on the balcony while I enjoy my wine and cheese. Happy just thinking about it.

We also often order breakfast, which the kids especially enjoy. And, of course, Mickey bars.

I find this service a remarkable luxury!

We ordered room service only once out of 4 cruises and really enjoyed it. It was the Alaskan cruise and we got to stay warm, enjoy the view and have a yummy meal. We had the steak sandwich, grilled salmon salad and of course Mickey bars. I found the Mickey bars melted a bit when it arrived. The sandwich and salad were surprisingly good. Would order again in the upcoming cruise if we miss lunch.

I forgot that we ordered room service the day we went to Tracy Arm! This was under the older alcohol policy so we had brought some hard liquor on board and we ordered hot chocolate and coffee and made some adult drinks. We also got some cookies. It was lovely to watch from our verandah as we came up to the glacier.

My 12 year old DD ordered room service every night around 10:30-11:30 pm. She ordered the All Hands on Deck, warm cookies, mickey bars and sometimes a fruit bowl. This was one of her favorite parts of the cruise. She would call and then she would jump to answer the door when they knocked. We shared the order between our 2 connecting cabins while sitting on the verandah talking about what we enjoyed most that day. One night when the CM delivered the order he noticed our magnet on the door that said "Happy 72nd Birthday Grandma" and he asked if he could come in to the room to wish Grandma a happy birthday! :bday:She hadn't seen the magnet yet, so boy was she surprised and confused as to how he knew. It was a funny moment! :rotfl2: We are sailing again in August and my DD is ready to call in her usual order that first night! And she will be ready with a big supply of $1s to tip (about $1/item or $5 per late night order.)

Have they always had Key Lime pie? It's been a few years since we cruised and I don't remember it being there before. DW would have had it every day if they did.

We've had just about everything off of the previous room service menu and enjoyed much of it. The biggest issue we've had is inconsistency.

Sometimes things were really good and other times, those same items weren't worth eating.

Generally good are the wings, the tomato soup, the cheese plate, mac n cheese, steak sandwich, and cheeseburger.

Consistently not good for us are the sides - generally I've found the chips stale and the coleslaw almost always comes up in a hot ramekin (which makes the coleslaw warm or even hot). Pizza hasn't been successful for us but I think we've only had that once.

Chicken tenders have been a mixed bag - sometimes they have been great and other times, ick. Salmon was good but now I see it's on a salad instead of orzo pasta and asparagus. Salads are usually good but we've had issues with forgotten dressings.

They've taken off one of their previous sandwiches (I think either turkey or ham) - it was served on a huge roll / chunk of bread with very little filling.

We've ordered wings, the blt, all hands on deck platter, Mickey bars (both ice cream & rice crispie), cake of the day; but my daughter's very favorite was the chicken Ceasar salad. She ordered that every single night after the end of the nights activities & still talks about it to this day. She was only 11 & that was probably one of her favorite memories of that cruise. Funny enough, on the second night I tried one bite & somehow managed to break my tooth in half with 4 days left to go. That was interesting!
You can get the rice crispie mickey bars!!!! Now i am even more excited.

We'll get a pot of coffee and a carton of milk the night before, because my husband is usually up crazy early and he values his personal safety and comfort, so we don't have anything delivered while I'm still asleep.

We've had and didn't like the chicken noodle soup (Weird. Tasted like boullion cubes with leftover spaghetti and red peppers in it.) The cheese plate that everyone loves was OK, not special. I got the steak sandwich once and it was a particularly bad steak, but I think that was one time only. And my son got fries once that he was totally happy with, but I found to be starchy and stale.

The BLT was very good. As were Mickey Bars, cookies, cake of the day, chicken tenders, and some salad I got. Pizza and burgers were fine.

All in all, I really appreciate having an alternative to the dining rooms on a night when I just need to chill. Last time, we played a game, watched a movie, and had some downtime, which we ALL benefited from.

We tried multiple times on our 14 nighter to get Mickey Krispie Treats or just plain ones for that matter for DD who was allergic to almost all desserts on the ship (nuts, gluten, egg) and they always directed us to the shops to buy them.

We did get them in our room as a gift on Frozen night, but everyone got one in their room, so it was nothing special.

Our experience also. The only free ones are if you attend the Castaway Club reception. And, be aware, they've been frozen.

We were on the Dream last month and they did not have krispie mickey treats. We had ordered them in the past from room service but had heard they no longer had them. They do not. However you can purchase them at Vanellope's Sweets and Treats if on the Dream.

And you can purchase them in the gift shops on the other ships.

We got them from our concierge hosts on the last couple of cruises and they had the plain and chocolate ears versions.

My three tips from our latest cruise in December:

1. We ask for extra crackers with our all hands cheese plate. We never feel like they give us enough
2. When we ordered breakfast the tag said "assorted muffins" I checked that and thought we'd get an assortment...we got 1. I guess the "assortment" means you'll get what we have. After that we made sure to put a number on it.
3. We started ordering milk and cookies every night around 10-10:30. The average wait time was 45 min-1 hour and that was for 2 glasses of milk and 3 cookies on a plate. I think this has become uber popular and created a little bit of a strain so fair warning you might want to order early.

What is the Cataway Club reception?
:offtopic:
For Gold & Platinum Castaway Club members, there's a reception, usually with several officers (including the Captain) and at least one character for photo ops. They usually serve finger food appetizer stuff, and often will show a video showing where DCL is headed in the future (yeah, it's commercial). Then at the end, as you exit, you get rice krispy mickey heads.
