Question about wearing rashguard shirts.

I did a search and could not really find answers.

I am going to Blizzard Beach on my next visit to WDW. I have never been before and am looking forward to it. I am 64 and have a FEW more pounds on than I am comfortable with. I have a black skirt bottom or black shorts bottom I want to wear and thought I could just wear a rash guard shirt for a top. If I only wear the shirt, what do you wear under it? I am large on top and need something. People have suggested a sports bra but I don't really like the "mushed" look that some give you. If I wore my bathing suit top - a tankini top would it look weird to have both on? Could I wear the rashguard with just a black bra under it?

This is all new to me. I don't really think I would go on a big slide, maybe something small. Any help with answers would be appreciated..

Personally, I would either get a sports bra that's made like a regular bra (with cups, not one of those pullover kind) or a bikini top (lots of places sell separates). The chlorine will kill a regular bra's fabric.

Do you have to wear the rashguard shirt for sun protection or are you trying to hide excess weight? I had to google rashguard shirt before I replied to see what it was. I couldn't be comfortable wearing a long sleeve shirt in the pool, but that is just me. Have you worn one before? I would wear what you are going to be comfortable in, who cares what your body looks like. If you need to wear that kind of shirt, just get one and try on different things under it to see what looks or feels right. I think if you have to wear something under it you may look or feel too bulky. I am curious what other people will say. I only see them on skinny surfer looking chicks when I google them. I know I probably haven't helped, I just suggest you wear what feels good!

As a guy I can't necessarily comment on bras, but there are a lot of different swimsuit top styles that could be worn under a rashguard. Just look around online - maybe Target to see something that appeals you.

I'd also point out that rashguards tend to be sized to be tight fitting, and a lot of people get larger sizes for a looser fit. I guess it's a surfer thing.

YES those rashguard items run small!

If the budget allows for it, look into Freya's bra-sized swim tops. They fit like a GOOD bra (with underwires) but are made for swimming.

Honestly, if you're wanting to wear a rashguard to hide/camouflage excess body weight, then I think you'll be disappointed. Most rashguards wear "tight" - the material should fit right next to your skin so there's not extra material rubbing anywhere ("rashguard"). So a rashguard will still show the outline of your body - it's just that more skin will be covered.

I would wear a rashguard for extra sun protection or because it provides more coverage & there's less chance of a wardrobe malfunction (going down slides for example), but not to disguise extra body weight.

I'm also not sure a rashguard would be comfortable w/ anything under it except maybe a bikini top.

I think you would be happier in a well-fitted tankini top - one w/ thick straps & a good, supportive bra - you can even find tankini tops that fit looser around the midriff. And then get a really pretty (& easy off/easy on) swimsuit cover-up to wear when you're lounging outside of the pool, walking to the snackbar, etc.

The important thing is to wear something in which you're comfortable & then smile & have fun!

I would wear it over a bikini top, which are usually sold separately. I would think it would gather and bunch (and therefore be uncomfortable) over a tankini.

Or I would do a sports bra. Jockey sells some nice ones that don't flatten the girls out.

Rashguards are typically designed to be worn over a bathing suit. I have seen some that have a built-in shelf bra, but if you need more support, you're better off just wearing a more modest bathing suit.

I usually wear mine with an old bra that I don't mind getting wrecked. We go to the Caribbean a lot and I CANNOT go outside there during the day without a long-sleeved rash guard!

I think you'd be okay with the tankini top and the rash guard over it. It doesn't have to be a skin tight rash guard. My son wears rash guards (short sleeved) because he is a bit overweight, and he wears them larger and looser on purpose, and they look fine.

I wear a short-sleeved rashguard for sun protection & to cover up my little belly. I wear it with a bikini top underneath. The top I have has adjustable sides so you can wear it longer or shorter, flat or a bit bunched in the tummy area, which helps hide my belly. You can always size up so the rashguard will be a bit baggy.

Here is the one I have http://www.landsend.com/products/wo...rd---tonal-island-batik/id_289251?sku_0=::X6L

They have a version with shorter cap sleeves as well.

My mom is 65 and exactly the same. We are going on a cruise in March, and she purchased a couple bathing suits from Roaman's. Not sure whether they are plus size or just meant to be modest, but they provide good coverage for and she's comfortable enough in them. Might be worth looking at, since rash guards are meant to be form fitting.

I'm 54 and also have a few extra pounds. I wear a bikini top under my rashguard. It gives me support and it dries quicker than a regular bra or sports bra.

That's from the origin as surfer gear. Wipeouts can be fun, slamming hard into the water like someone bellyflopping in the pool. A loose fitting rash guard might not protect as well when it slides against the skin on impact. Shouldn't matter to the average swimmer in a controlled environment.

When I bought mine I got it two sizes larger.

I wear a rash guard over a tankini top all the time, for sun protection. My favorite brand is Athleta. They make some really nice ones. I have a shortsleeved one with a little half zipper at the neck and it's my favorite. It's not skin tight and it hides my belly bulge wonderfully.

I prefer the short sleeve ones in Florida because with the humidity, the long sleeve ones feel too warm out of the water.

Thanks everyone.
My hope - as some said- is to find a loose, short sleeve one. I think it would make me feel more comfortable

I also have a few extra pounds...well, more than a few.
My biggest problem when visiting a water park is the inner thigh chafing. I prefer to wear a regular tank style swim suit that is modest on the top, with a pair of bike shorts over them on the bottom. This helps me feel more comfortable because it saves others from the shock of seeing my cellulite, but it also helps ease the chafing when walking around wet all day.

The Lands End rash guards are great. It will keep you cool when wet, and will dry quickly when you get out. I usually wore a tankini under the rash guard.

Some companies used to make bike shorts from the same UV blocking fabric.

For the last few years, I have worn a dryfit tshirt and a pair of bike shorts/leggings as my swim outfit of choice at waterparks and pools. I find them comfortable enough to swim in and I liked the coverage (esp for my few extra pounds!) My skinny teen DD, DS, and DH all wear about the same thing (the boys wear board shorts). my DD for modesty (her choice) and the boys for a bit of extra warmth.

My DD and I wore our dryfit shirts over tankinis for years but more recently switched to bikini tops because they dry faster (she took a while to get accustomed to the switch and didnt like it when the dryfit shirt rode up sometimes).

Only my DS will wear rashguards. The rest of us find the high collar too uncomfortable. Our dryfit shirts do wear out - but they last for years before stretching out so not much different from a rashguard. Same for our bike/running shorts, even the cheap ones.

I switched to men's bathing suits a few years ago when we moved to a sunny place. So much easier! Don't have to constantly pull things up (tops) or down (bottoms) to keep parts covered, and so much less sunscreen woes! I wear a sports bra or one of my regular bras that is close to the end of it's life under the rash guard top, then I wear men's shorts on the bottom.
