The Running Thread - 2016

Todays QOTD was suggested by a fellow poster of this thread. I think we may have touched on it once before, but I figured it was worth another look.

QOTD: Do you run with a group. Either a structured running group or just friends that have found a time to get together and run? If its a formal group, what is the cost associated with being in the group?

Solo runner here, too. Just me and the voices in my head.

Same here! Just me myself and I. I never have run with anyone, and I don't think I'd like it. I like to put music on and crank it up. I also like to worry about my pace and only my pace.

I have a race update form the Hall of Fame half marathon all the way back on 4/24/16. I drove the course a couple days before the race and hated it, it went through areas of town that are not good and was just plain. This was to be my third half marathon. My two prior were the Wine and Dine 1/2 of a half and Run the Bluegrass, so I was ...spoiled. The previous two races were beautiful and fun and also had great expos. I wasn't looking forward to running this race after driving it, then I went to the expo and it was in a football field with some small tents scattered around and it was sad. Race morning came and it was clear skies and cool temperatures. It was 37 degrees and a little cool waiting for the race to start but perfect skirt and short sleeve shirt running weather. I ended up really enjoying the race. There were quite a few other people doing intervals and I had a similar pace to a few and kind of fell into a neat rhythm of passing then being passed by the same groups for most of the race. It was interesting to see how our different interval times all worked at roughly the same pace. Earlier in the month I ran my first half and had a PR of 3:04:07 , that was a tough course with lots of elevation gain. This race was fairly flat and I was pretty sure I could knock some time off of it so I was hoping to get under 3:00. I had another PR with a time of 2:56:07, so I was very happy with that and I'm sure that it was one of the reasons that I liked the race so much. My only real problem with the race ended up being the water at the finish line, it was room temperature eewww. I don't mind the water stops not having cold water but when I am done running I want a cold bottle of water. This was a local race for me and it was really nice to only have a 10 minute drive to get there, it made for a relaxed morning before the race. I went from not wanting to run the race to having a good time and will probably run it again next year, so a success all around. I also think that I really like the half marathon distance. I'm slow. I huff and puff starting at 20 yards in, my lungs just don't work like they should. I have to use intervals so I can catch my breath even though the rest of me feels like it could keep on running. I run at pretty much the same pace from 5k to a half, the difference is at a 5k I'm one of the last to finish, at a half marathon I have quite a few behind me and feel a little bit faster.

ATTQOTD: I wonder if this thread self-selects for more introspective runners. I also run solo and prefer it that way! It's nice to have some alone time and not worry about keeping pace/conversation with others. I feel like this thread is sort of like a running group, even though I don't have the temerity to sign up to the strava group yet.

Totally agree.

That is exactly what I was thinking! And I join the ranks of peference to run solo to a running group. My area has several running groups and I have joined one on the past, but ultimately I do prefer to run alone.

.
So spent today at the track n field finals of the Invictius Games. Talk about an amazing experience- watching wounded warriors from 14 countries compete, where last is as celebrated as first and watching people who have overcome incredible odds take to the starting line.

What a cool experience! I saw the pictures of Prince Harry at the GF I think? I would have liked to run into him this weekend! ;)

Thanks for the responses guys! I was curious how popular running groups were. I think it sounds fun to do long runs with a group. I found a semi local one to me, but the cost is $90 for the running season and that seemed a bit high. I have some friends that run together, but they start their run at 5:45am and that is way too early for me (I will have to start applying the good ideas from yesterday's QOTD ;) ).

$90 is not a bad deal if the runs are supported. While I don't mind carrying my own fluids, as the pile of Fuel Belt bottles and belts in my apartment can attest, I find it much easier to have drinks and snacks waiting for me along the way. I love turning a corner and seeing the car waiting for us with ice pops, pretzels, jelly beans, and kinds of other good stuff.

No kidding about the on course support. They gave us all 1st Marathon stickers for our bibs, so they could really focus on us newbies. I don't think I ran more than 3 miles before I would have a coach run alongside me to check on me and/or give me advice.

Does Don still run you up to the last lefthand turn before the finish and then congratulate you and send you on your way? That's one of my favorite memories of the race.

That's cool, I've been trying to follow some of it. Pretty inspiring for sure.

My wife went to Notre Dame, but we only go to a few football games each year. She's not big into sports. Hopefully the rain won't be too bad for the game tonight.

Game was a wash out. Playing two 7 inning games today starting at 2:30 CST.

QOTD: Have you ever gone on a run that you regretted?

ATTQOTD: There have been many times that I did not feel like going for a run, but not once have I ever gone out and get the miles in did I think, man I wish I would have just stayed watching TV on the couch.

On a side note about morning runs. I was successful in waking up shortly after 5 this morning and got in a nice 4.25 miles.

This week we have the following folks with races.

14 - @michigandergirl - Fifth/Third River Bank Run 25K (2:40:00 / N/A)
14 - @Baloo in MI - Fifth/Third River Bank Run 25K (2:10:00 / N/A)
14 - @derekleigh - Stonyfield 5K (NG / N/A)
14 - @Berniemgr - Running With the Cows Half Marathon (2:05:00 / N/A)
14 - @Miranda - Maine Coast Half Marathon (2:45:00 / N/A)

Good luck to all of you! If you would like to revise your goal, let me know. Hope each of you have a great race and I look forward to hearing how it went!

QOTD: Have you ever gone on a run that you regretted?
Actually I think I can say that I have. Before I had proper shoes (or knew how to pace myself) I would get shin splits. Even through the pain, I would go out and run and I honestly should have rested them.
However other than running with an injury I have never regretted going out for a run!

My experience is similar. I've never felt regret after finishing a run, I almost always feel much better for having put in the effort.

I am not revising my goal for my race, but I am not brimming with confidence that I will achieve it. I've had shin splint issues the last few weeks and haven't finished my training as well as I'd hoped. I am nonetheless looking forward to my Half Marathon. No matter whether I reach my goal or not it will be a nice update of where my training is and a kick in the rear to correct any issues I am having in reaching my longer-term goals.

ATTQOTD: Only one, when I had Plantar Fasciitis, I did a run I knew shouldn't have, and caused a partial tear of the tendon. I just really felt like I needed some good running endorphins and thought I'd go slow. I then spent 6 weeks in a walking boot. Other than that, which was pure stubborness, I have had many runs I did not feel like doing but I always feel great once I am about a mile in:)

QOTD: Have you ever gone on a run that you regretted?

Yes. I've gone on a run a few times when I've been sick, thought I could tough it out, and ended up making myself worse. Instead of missing one day to recover, I missed several. I learned my lesson and since then, I will gladly give up one day of training in order to not lose a week.

I just finished my Tink recap if anyone is interested

you can scroll to the bottom if you just want to read about the race, the earlier posts are the days leading up to it.

Yay! I look forward to reading this recap today.

You are absolutely right, this is like my running group. I figure these are the things I'd talk to my group about if I had a group. But this way I get to talk to everyone of all abilities, not just the ones at my pace who can make it out at the same time as me :) Hey, maybe some weekend (it'd be totally hard to coordinate) we could all run "together"...like a Disboards 5k. Has that ever been done?

Congrats @Krynn on your PR!

Can I ask the board a question related to "coming back from an injury"? Mine is minor. I tweaked my foot running hills during a 10k at the end of April. I rested with no running since that happened and my foot all week has gotten better and better. It's feeling pretty darn good today compared to that race weekend. I did not end up seeing a doctor because it was improving with rest and was never a mind-numbingly painful thing...more of a soreness thing. Sooooo...how do you all babystep your way back into training. Tonight is out because my hubby has his swim triathlon training class. But tomorrow since the weather is nice I could go out on a walk just to see how I feel. My next big race is in July so I have time to ease myself back. I miss running but don't want to be stupid about it. I also NEED new shoes and I think this confirms it...the cushioning I believe is pretty shot.

Oh, just noticed new QOTD:
ATTQOTD: Once when I was first starting out, I ran a local 5k the same morning that I had a fancy swing dance themed dinner-dance at night and it was not so much the run that I regretted as it was the combination of the two events. My cardio was not what it is now. I was a puddle of a person the next day.

ATTQOTD: Similar to others I have regretted running when I had an injury and it prolonged the healing. Other than that even if I have a bad run I am always glad that I atleast got out there and tried.

My first real race as a Disney race. I did a POT race before that but it was tiny and just for the purpose of getting a better corral at ToT. So anything after a Disney race, short of a world major marathon, will be hard to match the organization or and "show" Disney puts on, IMO. I heard the Rock and Roll series are pretty good as well but haven't done one to know. But I have been fortunate to pick some really good local races. I have enjoyed them all. Of course I look around and say, "this isn't Disney" but I do that to everything in my life. My local amusement park, any restaurant I go to gets compared to Disney. I compare every hotel I stay at to the Grand Floridian. My whole point is, sometimes you find a diamond in the rough when doing the local races and while it isn't Disney they can still be a lot of fun. I am glad you ended up liking the race and congratulations on the PR.

II have done a training run with someone once. It was fun but I know him so we had plenty to talk about. I am not sure I would like running in a group. I realize its a good way to network and stuff but even if I could get my schedule to work to fit it in I just like running by myself. I agree that this is a "running group" for me. You get the support of people here. You can learn from others. Nobody has to worry about keeping up with @CheapRunnerMike :scared:. And maybe some day I will get to meet some of you at future runDisney race. Which brings up another excellent point, you guys all like Disney. I have talked to other runners that come into work and not all of them like Disney so what would I talk to these people about on training runs?

Tough question to answer. During some runs, when I am in pain, I am swearing at myself for being out on that run. I am wishing someone I knew would drive by and offer me a ride home :rolleyes1:rolleyes1:rolleyes1 Of course I run on a quiet road where nobody would ever drive by so it is wishful thinking but you get the point. So, during the run I regret some runs but when I am home and I get to log that mileage on my chart I never regret it. And as I am doing that I am usually planning my next run. And sometimes during a race I seriously questioned what was going through my head as I signed up for that particular race. Any marathon for example. Usually at mile 18, once the pain really sets in, I call myself all kinds of names and wonder what the heck I was thinking. Of course I am typing this and hoping my ankle is OK when I go to the doctor so I can have no excuse not to sign up for Goofy. But I am already questioning the sanity of that decision as well. :teeth::teeth::teeth:

I have rambled enough but I think you get my point.

@Mommanoffherrocker, I will read your post at work. I just don't have time right now, I have to get ready.
