Running costumes

IMG_2567_zpsfruynxpi.jpg

Just finished my Rapunzel costume for the half! Hoping the weather isn't too hot and I regret my decision to have sleeves.

Getting ready to head out to Orlando for the Dopey Challenge, I've got four costumes lined up (hope to post pictures later): 5k-White Rabbit (partner going as Alice), 10k- Merida, half- Snow White (partner going as Doc), marathon- Jessica Rabbit. Hope it's not too warm!

On a side note, my partner is an academic researcher who studies Recreation & Play, and is doing a study of people who run/walk races in costumes. Basically just finding out more about how people pick costumes, what their motivation to do costumes is, etc. If anyone is interested in helping out by taking a short online survey, it'd be much appreciated. • Layered costumes, that could conceal prohibited items, are not permitted (e.g. Jedi robes).
Question: I was going to dress up as Honey Lemon for the 5K with a lab coat. Do you think that that constitutes a layered costume? And does that mean they'll be turning away people who dress in layers to keep warm prior to the race (including bath robes)? I'm not sure how this can be enforced.

I was waiting for the official clarification on the costumes. I don't think they're too over the top. I like costumes I just think they should be functional and made out of proper materials. Personally I think running with extra props or an added layer would be more annoying than anything else.

Oh well... there goes all the jedi masters at the star wars races!

Lab coat is going to count layered for sure. A long coat isn't too far from a robe.

I don't think it would be an issue if you were wearing a jacket to keep warm because that's what jackets are for. I'm sure they'd have you take it off to check. I don't think they'll turn people away either they'll most likely tell you to ditch the extra layer and come back.

Had no problem or even second look from staff with my Eeyore onesie today. FWIW, I did overhear some rD personnel talking with another runner and telling them tomorrow would be pretty relaxed as well but the weekend would see security ramped up.

Yeah - they let a gal run in a full wedding dress as Wedding Day Ariel, and I saw five or six people wearing cardboard boxes to make up a monorail train. So maybe the costume email was more of a CYA move than anything else.

It may also be that the official release of the policy was too close to the date of marathon weekend and they won't be as strict until the next one.

I obviously have no authority on the topic, but I think a lab coat would be fine, as long as it's not super long (and I don't think Honey Lemon's is super long.) There's a huge difference between a Jedi robe and a lab coat - a lab coat isn't as "flowing" and I think far less likely to be able to easily conceal anything.

That's what I was thinking. I'm curious to see what happens next weekend, since the costumes are normally a little more out there for Star Wars events.

This is true. I'm wondering if they're hoping people will read it and be dissuaded from bringing elaborate costumes to Star Wars or if they actually intend to enforce it since the official word came out two weeks before? I would think there is a small group that goes from WDW for the marathon straight to DL for Star Wars so for those people going without their costumes might be upsetting.

I think they were somewhat lenient. No one even blinked at my lab coat. Good thing, too, because it was cold this morning.

And, of course, there were these guys:

And I also saw a guy with a HUGE Mickey head symbol rigged up to his back with metal struts. The thing had to be at least 2' X 2', if not larger.

Quick question, has anyone ever done a 100% cotton shirt for their costume? I am toying with a last minute costume idea for star wars and everything is cotton.

I have a question for you all! I'm going to be Alana, one of Ariel's sisters! How accurate would you feel like the costume would be if I wore purple mermaid scale leggings instead of magenta? If you watch the movie, her tail goes from purple in one scene to magenta in another. Her shells always stay the same color; purple. According to Disney Wiki her tail was intended to be magenta with purple seashells, but also shows purple tail with purple seashells! Not sure which one to portray? Any ideas are welcome and Thank you!! If you decided to comment on my costume idea, please quote me so I see it! :D

I used a cotton t-shirt for the Disneyland 5K. Crazy uncomfortable...I need shirts that can breathe when I run. Won't be making that mistake again!

I hate running in 100% cotton, but if you do it regularly maybe it wouldn't bother you. I use dri-fit shirts.

I've done a few shorter (3-4 miles) training runs in cotton shirts with a tech tank underneath. I found it doable, but not my favorite. I don't think I'd do it for a longer run.
