DLP Closed on 7/17?

I've heard some mumblings that DLP might be closed on 7/17 for the anniversary celebration. Park hours on DLR's website doesn't indicate this, but those same people report that DLP was closed on 7/17/05.

What's up with this? Any musings or theories to share?

Disneyland is not going to be closed on July 17th...baring some natural disaster or other unforeseen event. It was not closed on July 17, 2005 either. DisneyGeek.com has photos from July 17, 2005 and several Dis'ers on this board were there as well.

Now...it's possible that Disneyland might reach capacity at some point during the day and then have to stop allowing guests to enter the park. That has happened in the past, but full park closures to the public have been very rare (e.g., the day of mourning for President Kennedy, 9/11, after the Northridge Earthquake for safety inspections).

I think people might be referring to the very real possibility of reaching capacity. This doesn't mean it's closed. It means after enough people fill the parks that the fire marshal feels more would be unsafe, the parks will close their gates in various stages, not allowing new entries to the parks, or in some occasions, even returns once you leave depending on the size of the crowd.

I was there in 2005 on July 17th! Definitely not closed, but like someone else mentioned the park could hit capacity at some point that day.

Were they allowing returns at the 24 hour event in May?
Nope. They went into full shut down, people trying to return in the afternoon were not let back in until the wee hours of the morning. If you go and capacity crowds are a potential do NOT count on getting back in, there were lots of angry people on Twitter who made the mistake of buying tickets and leaving the park who were unable to return that afternoon. I believe reports indicated they allowed returns briefly as part of the shut-down stage but then they closed out everyone. Even people with dining reservations were not allowed in once capacity was reached, there was no work around. If you make it in, stay in!

Thanks! My plan is to stay in once we are in. I have ADR's for breakfast and dinner at Carnation Cafe.

Yeah, definitely stay in once you're there and get there early just to be safe. When I went to the 24 hour event this year, I stayed in, but a friend I was going to meet up with for a while and who was sharing my hotel room but had other people she was meeting for most of the day got stuck outside and didn't even bother returning because the line to get back in was so crazy.

Oh, OK, so they were referring to capacity shutdowns. Makes sense.

In these cases, are readmits allowed to honor ADRs?

It depends on what level/stage closure the parks have reached. DLR has not published how they define capacity closure stages, so it's all guessing at this point. Based on the 24-hour day, the first closure restricts new entries into the park, but re-entries are allowed. The final (most severe) closure stage prohibits anyone from enter the park (so it doesn't matter if you have an ADR or not). There might be some middle stages, but it's not clear what they are.

I was there at capacity during the 50th anniversary and I know I had to upgrade my single park ticket to a park hopper to be allowed in because DL was closed to new guests, but if you were in DCA then headed over to DL, they'd let you in, so perhaps that's one of the stages? It'd be nice if they just came out with what their stages are.

Unlike DW, I don't believe DLR makes public what their closure levels entail. I know that on the 24 hour day they closed to new admissions early in the afternoon, but were allowing re-entries until later in the afternoon when they completely closed DL to everyone. Once it was completely closed they did not allow anyone, so if you have a dining reservation, I would get there early and not leave the park. They didn't start allowing those who were already in DCA when the full closure went into effect to enter DL until 3 AM.

I wouldn't be surprised if there were several different levels between "no new entries" and "no entries" and it might depend on what they think will work the best to reduce crowds. It sounded like on the 24-hour day, it went from "no new entries" straight to "no entries" with little or no warning/intermediate levels.

Disneyland was for sure opened July 17, 2005 because I was there! ;)

Me too, I was there that day as well though it was completely by accident. Imagine showing up to the park thinking it was just another day and seeing THAT crowd at 8 am haha.

Oh my goodness! We met a family that did not know that it was the 50th while waiting in line for the "I was there" pin. They were from FL. I cannot remember, but I think they found out the day before. I was in line at 2am! I remember the crowd at the Esplande when they let us through, it was NUTS!

DL did close for a day prior to the 50th kickoff. While it's possible that there will be areas of the park closed on the 16th for media events, it's unlikely because there isn't going to be anything revealed on the 17th and unlike 2005, the trend now is to control who sees all the preview items and posts pics online (hence the media events) instead of doing a big reveal all at once.

I agree with SMD that there might be some localized closures on the 16th for media events, but I largely think they did most of the media stuff prior to the kickoff on May 22. So I don't think we're going to see any wholesale closures this time around.

I did not arrive until 4:30pm on the 50th and got right in without any wait and received the free golden Mickey ears. When did they hit capacity because the park was not busy when we were there?
