Official 2015 Disney Marathon Thread

Does anyone know of a good alternative to chocolate milk that is lactose-free? I'd like that it is pre-packaged and easy to leave in your gear check/post-run gym bag, but unfortunately I'm lactose-intolerant. :scared: I'd like to try refueling within 45 mins of my runs.

Silk brand Chocolate Almond Milk is fantastic. It comes in 8oz aseptic containers, too, perfect when on the go (no refrigeration required).

I bring several four-packs (of the 8 oz containers) in both vanilla and chocolate to destination races. To up the protein for a recovery drink, I pour a couple almond milks in a water bottle with some brown rice and/or hemp protein powder (and ice if the weather is warm), and shake. Soooooo tasty!

Chocolate Orgain is really good too and I've had great success with it after a run. I believe they now make a completely lactose free version. Their original smoothies aren't 100% lactose free, but they have a lot of information on their website regarding lactose in their products.

I've used the chocolate almond milk and it's very nice.

Oh and for foot stuff, my first stop when I hurt is my chiro. Not every chiro will work on non-spinal bones (I wouldn't when I was in practice), but mine is great with it. And every time, so far, it has just been a bone slightly out of place causing problems. Quick manipulation and my foot is good as new. I wouldn't have been able to do any of these races if it weren't for my chiro. Alas, he simply refuses to travel with me. I really should send DH to chiropractic school. Bit expensive, though.

Dark chocolate almond milk is great:thumbsup2

Thx a mint for all the suggestions - much appreciated! :goodvibes

I use Silk Original Unsweetened in my oatmeal every weekday morning, but never thought to check out their other products. Duh!

I will look into these recs; I was worried that the carb-to-protein ratio might have been lost with the lactose-free products - fab to hear these working for you!

cheers,
:)

Hope all the aches, pains and injuries clear up quickly for those suffering. I can empathsize as my training buddy's calf injury set us back 8 weeks in the summer.

ToT was my first rD event and I had an absolutely awesome time - really looking fwd to this monster, big event in January!

cheers,

Does beer count?

I use Gu recovery smoothies. I've also used hammer recovery. I prefer the way the gu tastes. If I forget one after a long run I remember how much they help me. :)

Running in my 2nd half marathon Saturday. The forecast for race start is 29 degrees with 10-20 mph wind. I am a fair weather runner so this is not good news. I guess I will learn to run in the cold real quick! Trying to figure out how many layers to wear, hat vs earband, cheap throw away gloves or buy nice athletic ones, do I wear a scarf...etc? Not exactly questions I want to have two days before the race. Last weekend was 70 degrees, haha, it figures!

Here's how I would do it:

- jacket or sweatshirt for pre-race waiting/first mile(s) (toss later or tie around waist)
- 2 long sleeve tech tees (one or both mock turtle neck style)
- tights
- not lightweight socks
- ear band
- knit beanie hat
- not cheap gloves (if you don't want them later in the race, tuck in back of tights, same with beanie hat)
- 6 hand warmer packets (hands, head, torso, chest and back -- for gals, under running bra... toss packs if/when no longer desired)

If there is a long pre-race wait, I would wear a couple thick trash bags like a cape, but wrap tightly for better insulation.

Good luck on the run! :thumbsup2

You can dress for about 10 degrees warmer than it is because you'll warm up quickly while running. If you're chilly at the start, you'll be fine during the race. If you're warm at the start, you'll be hot during the race. For most people, anyway. If I were you, I'd run in tights, long sleeve top, jacket, hat, and gloves. All the top layers can be easily adjusted as you go along. Bring along some cheap sweats to wear in the corral and toss say before you start.

Oh I hadn't thought of hard warmer packs!
Thanks!

I'm still on my first year of running so I'm having to learn all of this stuff. Here's what I found to help me with the "what should I wear while running" question. I've found it very useful! Hopefully it helps you too. :goodvibes

Great! Thank you! It's currently sleeting and 40mph wind gusts! Lovely Trick or Treat weather! Hoping the wind will at least die down by morning.

I wrote a while back asking for long running routes at Coronado Springs. I wanted to let everyone know that I discovered today that there is actually a sidewalk that runs all the way from Coronado Springs to the All Stars. You have to cross the street at McDonald's, but there is a cross walk. I was able to do a 14-mile run with minimal running in circles around Coronado. I also discovered that it's more pleasant to run around the external perimeter road of the resort than to zig-zag around all the pathways around the lake, dodging people the whole time. I wondered if somebody would tell me I couldn't run on the road, but nobody ever did. I ran clockwise around the resort so I would not be in the same traffic lane as the buses, and that worked out great.

Over at All Stars, I was surprised to see RunDisney logos in the sidewalk. I wonder if the perimeter sidewalk could have been put in at RunDisney's request?

Finally, over by McDonald's there was a parking lot, so I figured I would see if I could go anywhere through it. At the opposite end there was what looked like a trail, so I tried it. It took me to Disney bee hives! I never knew these existed and it was cool to see them. A sign said the hives are for natural pest control. Pretty cool.

Nice run.:thumbsup2

Mandatory McFlurry stop for me when passing that McDonald's, at least during the Marathon. :rotfl:

McFlurry John

John are you the one that put out the walking tips back two years ago around this time? I remember benefiting from them and don't know how to search for them. It was when it would have been during training for Marathon weekend 2013. If that was you can you make a link for them. Thanks!
