Im going into the city tomorrow to test drive some cross overs, small suv's. I want good gas milage. Looking at mostly subaru. Maybe toyota rav4. Open to suggestions. Ive looked at consumer reports books and costcos online info also. Thanks for the imput. Mum of two teenage pirates now who want something besides a mini van. Lol

Probably a little bigger than you'd like but I have a 2011 Kia Sorento. I love it. I get great gas mileage for an SUV- about 26 MPG. We bought ours at the end of 2011 used for $18,000. It's a very reasonably priced SUV. We got the one with the third row that we rarely use but is nice to have. It doesn't feel big like a Tahoe or truck.

I have a 2008 Nissan Rogue and I don't recommend it. The transmission is horrible. Also if something electric goes out it kills the transmission. :headache:

My mom has a rav4 and really likes it. We have a Honda Odyssey and have had good luck with it, but generally like Toyota better (we have a Camry too).

We have purchased two cars in the past 2 years. First was a Hyundai Sonata, second was a Hyundai Tucson.

Don't buy a Nissan with a CVT transmission - save yourself a huge headache. Had to lemon out my 2013 Nissan Pathfinder.

We have a 2012 Subaru Outback that is fantastic - three years old without one trip to the dealer for any recalls or repairs. It also gets great gas mileage and is fun to drive.

We also have a 2014 Honda Odyssey and a Mazda 6. No problems with either. Would recommend either brand.

Check out the Mazda 5 - it is the cutest little SUV. If I were in the market for a small SUV, that is what I would want - or the new Subaru Outback with Eyesight.

We have a Subaru Outback and it's been great. Like that we can haul lots of stuff, but feels like we're driving a car.

I have a Toyota Sequoia. I plan to steer clear of Toyota next time.
My brake light comes on ALL THE TIME! It was new to me and I have had if for 3 years. I am done with it. Due to our family size, need for cargo and towing space --we are looking at the Nissan NV. I have several friends with one and it gets rave reviews. Obviously beyond your needs--but Nissan as a brand may be worth checking out.

I would go back to Honda if we fit. :-)

I have a Subaru Tribeca. I love it. I think 2014 is the last year for production. I bought mine used. Originally I was looking for another Outback or a Forester but the Subaru dealer had a Tribeca that was the same price and comparable year/milage as those for the same prices. It had more features (leather, heated seats, etc). I almost didn't even look at it because it was bigger than what I wanted. It doesn't feel big when driving it though. As soon as I test drove it, I loved it, didn't even bother looking at the Foresters on the lot. Gas mileage is about 19 city which isn't great but my old Outback wasn't significantly better .

I really like my 2011 Toyota Highlander. It is only 4 cylinder, so better gas mileage. 5 star safety rating. 3 rows of seats....I usually have last row folded for more trunk space.

We bought the Subaru Crosstrack love it! Definately test drive one. 34 MPG.

I just purchased a 2014 Jeep Cherokee this past week and so far I love it. Great gas mileage (which is a plus for me since I drive a ton and travel). The space in it is amazing. It has all the bells and whistles (sirius xm, navigation, handsfree phone via bluetooth, ports for usb, etc etc). I was looking at the BMW X1 and the Subaru outback and chose this because I have had such great luck with Jeep in the past (Traded in my Toyota Highlander which I HATED), not because of cost because they were all about the same price. So far I love driving it.

I would definitely check out the XV Crosstrek. Haven't driven one, but they look like a lot of fun. I'd also take a look at a Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, maybe a Ford Escape, Honda CR-V (also take a look at Fit if you want something smaller and look online at HR-V...but that doesn't come out until winter I think). Also Nissan Rogue (more comments below) and at Subaru also look at Outback and Impreza.

I also had a 2008 Rogue. Mechanically, I thought it was fine and I had no problems with it...traded it in at about 85000 miles. My main gripe with it was terrible rear visibility. Backing up was an adventure. I think Rogue was one of the first to go with standard rear cameras, so much of that problem should be resolved. Plus they're on a new redesign as of the previous model year.

I bought a 2014 Ford Escape Titanium this summer and couldn't be happier. I get 25mpg driving through the mountains which is amazing! The cargo area is really spacious and its a comfortable ride. Very happy with my purchase.

bought a 2013 Honda CRV EXL with navigation last June - love it. The CRV, Toyota RAV4 and Mazda CX5 were in the running. I didn't like the Subaru enough to test drive it. Mazda CX5 gear shift was kind of weird. RAV4 had leather trim on the dash that I thought would fade. Also didn't like the cup holder placement. I love the CRV with the slide open compartment between the front seats. I'm short - as far up as I have to sit - the flip open compartment on the RAV4 and Mazda would have been useless while driving.

I drive a 2010 Rav 4 Limited and its the best car Ive ever bought. Good on gas and the perfect size. I highly recommend it!
