2014 Grand Floridian Resort & Villas FAQ: Vacationing in Grand Style!

I think you're right!;)

Amen, sister.:( We are not going nearly as often as in the past, for just those reasons. Everybody keeps telling me we need to check out DL.:)

LOL about the tantrum.

Enjoy your planning, and have a Grand vacation, sounds like a wonderful trip.

You really must plan some time at Disneyland. There is extra special magic to be found there, and there are many things that are not found at the World in both DL and DCA. Perhaps at holiday time? Currently the Christmas parade and character costumes are not limited to a party situation as they are at World, so from mid-November through the holiday season is a terrific time to visit. Both HM and IASW get marvelous overlays, and the Christmas decorations in Cars Land are fabulous. The Aladdin show at DCA is a full on Broadway show, and I thought it was better than the actual Broadway bound version I saw in Seattle a few years ago in its original incarnation. Let me know if you need more reasons!

The pulsating sounds of the Electrical Water Pageant have begun! :goodvibes

All the best from the fifth floor of the Grand Floridian! :thumbsup2

I love that this long time show continues. It is connected to many fond memories! I am always a little worried about it becoming a casualty of progress and new technology. I was sad when they just pulled out the lights of winter without doing something even more fabulous.

Off topic, but have you ever been to Sprinkles? I fell in love with them when we were in Cali a few years ago, and now we have one in Atlanta~

I'm really enjoying the onsite reports...it's making me more excited earlier about going this fall! :cool1: :woohoo:

I don't think it's possible for cupcakes to be off topic. :goodvibes I have not been to a Sprinkles, but thank you for putting them on my radar!

I agree, the onsite reports are super happy making!

I've read about that bakery, Coopersmom, and thought about making a visit to it (had not thought of having them delivered tho). I will plan a visit to downtown Atlanta just to go to Sprinkles! Must check out Holly's place tho! :thumbsup2
Now back to your regularly scheduled program.....;)

Filing away cupcake intelligence...

I'm by no means an expert which is why I was SO thrilled to find this board :disrocks: None of the room choices are made easy because of some numbering weirdness that uses X0XX for the 5th floor instead of X5XX. (Someone correct me if I am wrong on this!)

We booked the Deluxe King. Since we would prefer more room, our request was pretty simple: A Turret Room preferably 4021. Least favorite choice would be 4201.

So I'm in the "wait and see" mode now! :) By my calculations we have a 1 in 15 chance of a dream room pixiedust: and a 1 in 15 chance of 4201.:scared1: Also a 6 in 15 chance of a Turret and 9 in 15 chance of a room over Gaspies.

I haven't looked into any other category so I can't give odds on those! Hope this is of some help.

Liz

I love this analysis and am glad to have company in my obsessions. :thumbsup2

This is what I'm talking about! GF folks are the BESTEST! Thank you coopersmom :cheer2:

Liz

Yes, thank you very much!

So the way I figure it, we have an 8/15 chance of a room on the second floor with a MK view (eliminating 4201, with the tree view), a 3/15 chance of a turret room with a slightly less desireable MK view, and a 4/15 chance of no MK view at all (4201 and the 3 other turret rooms). This gives me a 11/15 chance of a room with at least some view of the MK and wishes, so that doesn't seem too bad. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Maybe I will alter my request to read MK/wishes view, not 4201. I tried not to get too specific, we just want to be able to see wishes from the room (I think we'll be missing the wishes view from the Poly CL room, which is what we've had the past couple of visits. That had sound as well and we loved it, particularly Hallowishes, which we'll be there for again this year! :cloud9:)

I like the simplicity of your request, and it gives them your most important priority.

We reached our 60 day mark Saturday and I'm back in the Fastpass + nightmare. DH really HATES this new system as he feels like it restricts what we can do. I keep telling him we can change it at ANY time up until the first Fastpass time and more importantly...the old system is GONE! I've decided to get them for only the days I know we are in THAT park. That leaves half the days for him to be "spontaneous" and I'll make FP on the way there! ;)

Our current food strategy is Breakfast, snacking for lunch, then a nice late dinner. I saw some awesome suggestions for snacks in here as well that have been added to the list. We were thinking of the cream puff from BoG but I'm not sure you can still walk up during lunch? DH read about the Cakecup at Cheshire Cat and he's got that on his list. Hopefully it's still there! Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Also does anyone have any experience with the Memory Maker? We have 4 in our party (different resorts) for 4 days then just the 2 of us for the other 6. Is it possible to add them onto the memory maker? I'm a bit confused with it in MDE as it seems to say it "reassigns (I took that to mean gives away my rights like it does tickets) to other people. I may have to sign up for the Memory Maker course when I check in!

Thanks for any help! Just when I think I can relax and let time pass, something else pops up!

Liz

Cakecup is now at the top of my list of new things to try!

Your FP+ plan is a good one. I am not a fan and would be super happy to go back to FP- but find one of the positives is flexibility. One day I decided not to go to AK in the afternoon as I had planned and was able to cancel my original FP+s and make new reservations for another park from my phone.

I haven't had multiple people on a memory maker yet. Hopefully someone else will have had some experience with this.

Just checked into GF after 3 amazing days at Portofino! I booked SL but got upgraded to RPC!! Wow. I'm not going to want to leave. But only booked. 2 nights CL then moving to Boca Chica if I get request.
TL day now just relaxing on beach but dessert is calling!
Tomorrow is a resort day sadly one daughter leaves tomorrow to go home. Which is main reason I booked CL.
I also think we got a deluxe room. They are going to have to pry my cold dead hands off the door to get me out !!!

Yay for pixiedust:!

That sounds awsome! Im doing universal for the first time next week and then the GF as well. How was portofino? How many days/nights is good? How do you feel switching to disney after universal? Or did u wish u had done universal last?

Sue, congrats on the wonderful pixiedust: ! Enjoy! :)

Circusgirl, I've visited DL during the holidays but only had one day;It really was as wonderful as you described and I so enjoyed seeing it! :goodvibes

Well not the same but dd and I wanted to see wwohp. We did HRH for 2nights and then poly for 4 after. We decided we would never do universal second. The quality and magic is just not there for us. However we are disney addict so.... Take that advice with a grain of "pixie dust".

I am planning a 2nd trip there and plan on either 1 night or 2 at Portofino (I've heard lots of disney peeps prefer it) then disney after possibly for January.

Already planning for end of May, 2014, beginning of June, next vac of COURSE! Anyway, "thinking" of DL; went summer of 2009, first visit to California, had a BLAST! Did San Diego few days then, but this time want to do Huntington Beach, few days:beach::beach:, then on to DL!
Aladdin sounds AWESOME! WOW!:thumbsup2 A little "concerned" though about crowds and "grad nights" end of May, beginning of June...What do you think? Someone on the boards told me the schedule of grad nights and "if we go" next May,early June will try to plan our visit around avoiding these days as I am concerned about the abundance of park goers during the day???:confused3 Any insight on this?

THANKS!!! Always FUN to do advance planning...:)In the meantime,
CAN'T WAIT for our 2 night stay this coming Dec at the GRAND! YAY!:santa:

Portofino was amazing. We had a harbour view with huge balcony on top floor. Def make time to return to resort at 8:30 to see the singers on Lobby balcony. We grabed a dinner from Sals, and ate outside at table on Piazza. Very enjoyable.
I think 3 full touring days are good. And we took mid day breaks, which are built into the Orlando Informer touring plans. They worked well. Check out the web site. 4 days if you really want to relax. With on site perk of Front of The Line pass, you breeze thru all the attractions (except Harry Potter).

Escape from Gringots closes down a lot !! If early park opening is 8am, leave resort by 7:0O!!! If you want to ride Gringots. Our second day it was closed till late morning  but our 3rd day was open. We got there at 7:45 and was already an hour posted wait. I think 45 min was actual wait. When we got off ride posted wait was 180 min :scared1:

We really enjoyed Portofino, but GF is amazing too! No problem leaving one for the other!

One other thing, download the Universal APP, very useful for checking wait times, etc.

Well said!:teeth: Cake of any kind - never off topic.

Don't you just love EWP?! I, too, am glad it hasn't been phased out, either in favor of something more high tech or not replaced at all.

Thank you so much for all the DL info. The more I hear, the more I am determined we will visit before long.::yes:: The holiday activities sound wonderful.:cloud9:

We have gone to USO for many years now, and love it. We used to feel as trisha posted, we wanted to "save" our favorite for last and went to USO first. However, over the years it dawned on us our USO visits were far more relaxing - we started putting it last, and I think that will be our plan from now on. Gives you a chance to recover from the fast pace of WDW.:goodvibes

With the opening of Diagon Alley, I would allow at least 3 days to enjoy both parks - but we have spent 6 days at USO and found plenty to do, and that was before DA.

Thanks for that update on Gringott's, we thought about adding a USO day to our upcoming WDW trip but decided to wait for them to work the bugs out.:goodvibes

Sue Congrats on the upgrade!!! How very Grand!! :goodvibes

Hi ladies, back with another quick question. Since it's going to be super hot on our arrival day (Saturday, so soon!), we may spend a few hours at the pool before going to Villains Unleashed at DHS. Since we plan to leave for DHS around 3, our VGF villa may not be ready beforehand. Is there somewhere for us to shower and change before the party?

Yes..there are showers at the beach pool...:thumbsup2 BTW TWO more days!!!!!! :dance3:

We're checking in a week from tomorrow for our first GF stay! So very excited!!!

Any last minute tips or tricks we should know about? Also, has anyone done any of the kids' spa treatments? I'm debating about taking DD for pedicures before MNSSHP.

:woohoo: Your trip is right around the bend!!! Only tip I have is to take some time and enjoy the resort itself...the music in the lobby in the evenings..the fun pool parties at the beach pool...watching the EWP from the boat dock ..oh and if you are up early on certain mornings there is a parasol parade in the courtyard as the housekeepers go off to start their day...:goodvibes

We are back from out trip to Tulsa where we let the grandparents tell our kids that they are taking us all to Disney! DS4 was excited, DS3 was excited because he has no idea what Disney World is, but was excited because big bro was excited. DD1 was screaming the whole time and clearly has no clue! (We are hoping to have our stubborn little red hair, blue eye baby girl walking by then...she will be 15 months in a few days). Anyhow, we made a countdown poster today. 29 days until we leave (driving) with stops in Tennesse, Georgia, then arrival at GF!

A few more questions...anyone know how tall the sinks are in the rooms? Just curious if we should bring a little stool so we don't have to help the boys wash their hands. Boys are 44 and 40 inches tall.

Last, would you recommend driving or taking the bus to DHS and AK from GF? We were thinking about driving as DH likes to be in control...however I have heard the GF parking lot can be quite a ways from the rooms?

Thanks all!

What a special way to let your children find out about your upcoming trip!! :goodvibes I am sure for Grandma and Grandpa too!

As for transportation to DHS and AK.. we always use the buses and generally have never had an issue or very long of a wait...although at times the buses can be very crowded..something I did not favor when my children were younger..During the busier times...there is usually a CM at the bus stop monitoring things in the mornings... there is also an information board that updates continually to let you know how long the wait is for the bus arrivals...

I love that this long time show continues. It is connected to many fond memories! I am always a little worried about it becoming a casualty of progress and new technology. I was sad when they just pulled out the lights of winter without doing something even more fabulous!

We too are long time fans of the EWP...and so glad that it hasn't become a casualty of progress... As for the Lights of Winter..I keep hoping that they will being that back again..eventually..

k&a&c'smom Thanks for your feedback on Citricos and Narcoosees...decisions...decisions...We really enjoy them both...but can get into a rut with my faves..and tend to book Narcoosees more... lol...

Trish We are January planning here too...:thumbsup2 Nothing like a WDW trip ( or UO and WDW in your case) ..to ward off the winter blues! ;)

JerseyGal Planning really is half the fun!! :goodvibes:

Morning grannyminnie..:surfweb: and to all the rest of my fellow GF fans...or as pas would say GF groupies..lol...

Hope that everyone is having a terrific Thursday!! :earsgirl:

I seem to remember reading some in-room literature during our recent stay that you can request a stool from housekeeping for little ones who need just a little boost at the sinks ;) Hopefully, someone who is there currently can confirm what I "think" I read :upsidedow so that you do not have to pack the stool for your trip. I am sure you will need all the available space for other gear given the ages of your cuties!

Good morning from the Grand! Took this photo on the boat headed to EMH at MK this morning. (Sorry I am a horrible photographer. It is a running joke in my family lol)

We checked in on Tues. around noon. They had a room ready but it was a king & we need two queens. Got a text later in the day with the new room number. But our magic bands wouldn't let us in. Went back to the front desk & learned they had texted us the wrong room number! So we headed to the new room & thought all was well. But when I called bell services to have our bags brought, I was told they had already been delivered...to the king room we were originally assigned! A bellman was sent to retrieve them & we got them fairly quickly. And in the meantime, we were settling into the room & noticed the toilet had not been cleaned & was in need of attention. Made a call to housekeeping & they apologized & sent a mousekeeper immediately. So despite a few hiccups initially, everything is good!

We are booked for June at the VGF (renting points) and couldn't be more excited!!!!

How exciting......I'm sure you're going to have a great time :cool1:.

I am looking forward to my upcoming trip despite the cupcake news. I am starting with 2 nights at the BCV to enjoy walking to the Epcot side of things, then 7 nights GF SL followed by 2 nights RPC in a king deluxe room. I'd originally booked 9 nights in SL on a bounceback, but I moved my dates so I could meet up with some friends who are doing the ToT race, and wound up outside the bounceback for the last two nights. I've been hoping for an AP discount, but the only discount available at any of the hotels for those nights was for RPC which came in about $90.00 less per night than SL at rack, so I decided to deal with the hassle of a room change to experience RPC at a savings.

Sounds like you have a great trip planned :wizard:.

Gonna be there three weeks from tomorrow for our first GF stay. Can't stand the wait!!!

:dance3:

You are going to love the GF :goodvibes.

Good afternoon everyone! 41 days until we're checking in at SL! In fact, we're already playing the "guess what we'll be doing 41 days from right now.... eating at Gaspies/riding Splash Mountain/enjoying an adult beverage in World Showcase/etc" game.

It won't be long.....the time will pass quickly and you will be checking into the GF before you know it :yay:.

Hi! We checked in yesterday at GP RCP. Our flight arrived at 1:45pm and we went straight to ME and we made it to GF about 2:50pm. We were the 2nd stop, which surprised me as we are always the 3rd. Our luggage did not arrive until almost 8pm.

I decided not to tell DH about the refurb after all. Wanted to see his reaction. He (or I should say "we") didn't hate it as much as I thought we would. The colors aren't as bold in person. The rooms as well, I was expecting a bright red but it's not. It is more like a brick color. However, the wood pieces don't seem to match in color (some dark and some light). The rug is nice and the deluxe room does have a pullout couch. Today has been a very nice day. Epcot seemed empty. Will take pictures and try to post when we return. We'll be here until 8/26 and then we'll be at CR Atrium CL for the 1st time. Until then...

Hope you are having a great time :). Enjoy your CR stay.

BC1836 calling davale4: We'll be at desserts and cordials tonight at about 8:15. We'll be at the far table near the front of the GF.

Hope you're enjoying the Grand :wizard:.

Hi everyone. Just booked RPC TPV for our trip next Summer. Very excited!!

How exciting.....you will love RPC as it's amazing :cloud9:.

No worries, ask anything you need. The character meals are at 1900 Park Fare.

:thumbsup2

We're down to 20 days before our first stay at the Grand! Can't wait! We're staying Standard Room, Main Building.

:cool1::cool1:

Really, though, with a std. room you won't be far from the lounge no matter what room you get;

I agree ;).

Alas, on 8/24 we will be on our drive home.

Hope you enjoy your last few days at the Grand :goodvibes.

We haven't been since FP+ started, but I'm not looking forward to it. We don't plan our park days until we're there (and it's usually not decided until the night before or that morning as we're heading out to go to breakfast), so I'm not sure how it's going to work for us to schedule FPs 60 days prior to our trip even starting :sad2:. I really wish Disney would have left that alone because it really hinders those (IMO) who like to do things on the fly rather than schedule every minute of every trip so far in advance.

MickeyNut Hope that you enjoyed your day yesterday!! The more things that I am reading about the refurbed Poly..the nicer it sounds!!

I did, thanks :goodvibes.

The Poly is amazing and I'm sure will be even more so after all of the renovations are done ::yes::.

I'm sure I'll have more questions before we leave, but when we get back I'll be sure to report back! I will be looking at the resort with new eyes as we've never stayed there before. I'm sure it'll be pure AWESOMENESS!!!

Don't hesitate to ask any questions as everyone here is very friendly and helpful :flower3:. Looking forward to your report when you return.

We just got back from Disney last night and we spent our last 2 nights at GF. OMG....I am in love with that place!!

We started our trip at POR for 4 nights. The 2 nights at GF were a splurge but we all left wishing we could have done all 6 nights there.

Overall, we had an amazing trip. POR was great but GF really was above and beyond what we ever expected and it is definitely my new favorite resort.

Thanks for your review :). Glad you had a great time and loved the Grand. It is an amazing resort that it's hard not to love everything about it :wizard:.

I'm going to have to try the Wave, everyone has raved about that place.

The Wave is one I want to try as well as I am always reading good things about it. I think we might try breakfast when we try the CR ;).

Hi ladies, back with another quick question. Since it's going to be super hot on our arrival day (Saturday, so soon!)

Just wanted to say I hope you have a great trip :dance3:.

We're checking in a week from tomorrow for our first GF stay! So very excited!!!

:banana::banana:

How cute the reactions were from your kiddos :goodvibes. Sounds like it's going to be a fun and amazing trip!!!

I agree with others about the step stool as it would make it easier for them to use the sink :).

We always use Disney transportation to the parks, even when we rent a car, as we just prefer to be driven/dropped off vs having to park and walk farther or use trams.

Just checked in to Sugar Loaf! We got an awesome room - the deluxe room with sitting area. It is sooooo beautiful! I don't know how to post a picture from my phone....so I will post pictures when I get home.

We check in on 9/15 to SL. I would like a trip report of SL. Hope that your vacation is magical pixiedust: And, can not wait to see your pictures. The 15th can not come soon enough.

I just realized my pic didn't go through. I was trying to post it via photobucket on my iPhone. Sorry. I will try again. I selected the option for forums etc. but obviously I got it wrong.

Thanks for popping in, glad check in went well :flower3:. Sorry about the toliet issue, but glad to hear it was taken care of promptly. Hope you have a great time and enjoy the GF :wizard:.

BlueSkies - sounds like maybe Citricos should get the call, if you want to move out of your normal routine.:) It is excellent, and right there in the Main Bldg.:thumbsup2

You want to choose the one that begins and ends with .:) In my account, the choices are named "Direct", "HTML" and "IMG". HTH!

Sorry about the musical chairs with the room, hopefully you are set now and can get on with your Grand vacation!pixiedust:
