The Darling Family's Endless Summer Vacation: August 2013 New 1/24

For tonight’s dinner we had to take a boat ride. So we headed down to the BLT dock and waited for a boat to take us over to Fort Wilderness. Tonight we were going to Hoop Dee Doo Revue! We arrived at Fort Wilderness and just enjoyed the tranquility of the place as we waited for our dinner.

We browsed a bit in the shop. They had some really cute resort specific merchandise here.

DH was very excited because they actually had Lone Ranger merchandise. (Remember he is the only person I know who actually saw that movie twice.) He actually bought this badge.

We had reserved Category 3 seating which is normally in the balcony. However, because it wasn’t a full show we were upgraded to Category 2. This meant we were at the back of the main level. This was great for us, but I don’t think it would have been worth the cost of an upgrade if we’d paid for it. Anyway, the show began and with it our dinner.

The most memorable part of dinner for me was Wendy’s reaction to the fried chicken. She took a bite out of it and said with utter shock, “Is that a bone? Is there a bone in my chicken?” I laughed and said, “Yes that is exactly what it is.” She said, “No. There is an actual bone in my chicken!” I couldn’t stop laughing. I guess it is true that all we ever eat is boneless chicken (either nuggets or breasts), but I didn’t realize she had never had chicken with bones. I guess bones in chicken are kind of like rotary phones. Kids today just don’t know what to do with them. Anyway while I was laughing at this there was a show going on. It was a fun show too. Here are a few pictures.

It isn’t something we’ll do every trip, but we may take the boys back sometime. After dinner was over we took another lovely boat ride back to Bay Lake Tower. Then we decided a night in the Magic Kingdom was in order. I don’t remember too many details about this evening, but I’m sure we had a grand time. We watched the fireworks from a table sitting outside Pinnochio Village Haus and it was DH’s favorite firework viewing spot ever. It was pretty cool how fireworks went off all around us. It was like watching a tennis game trying to keep up. Plus it was uncrowded and we had a table. In addition we shared this snack during it.

So it was a pretty good spot even if the castle wasn’t the backdrop. We also watched the late Electrical Parade this evening. I know this because we have these pictures.

After the parade, the park was closed so we headed toward the exit, but as we headed out I realized we hadn’t gotten a castle picture yet with DH. So we stopped and posed for a quick picture.

It was a great way to end Part one of our Disney vacation. We were leaving the next day, but for once it really wasn’t sad because after a beach vacation we still had part two ahead of us.

Hey! I know one of the guys you saw in the hoop de doo!! The guy in the greenish vest with the green bow tie is a friend of mine! :) just saw him yesterday actually. He's home for a bit right now.

Small world! He plays the comic relief kind of dorky guy. He was really good!

We woke up this morning and said goodbye to BLT. We were headed to a week at the beach with my parents, brothers, sister and their families. So it wasn’t with too much sadness that we said goodbye. We headed to Cocoa Beach and when we arrived my parents and my boys were waiting for us. They gave us a great report on the cruise, but as I mentioned earlier not many pictures. Oh well. This is a Disney trip report so I’ll just quickly sum up our week. Mostly what we did was play at the beach. Here are a few pictures.

We got sunburned pretty badly. Once you see pictures on our return to Disney you’ll notice some extensive peeling (especially on Wendy.) I guess we didn’t reapply sunscreen enough. A highlight of the week was our visit to the Kennedy Space Center. It really was impressive and I’ve never really been into space travel. Here are a few pictures from that.

Overall it was a great week. At the end of the week we packed up and headed back to Orlando. Disney World, we aren’t done with you yet!

I have got to finish this trip report up before our upcoming Christmas trip. So look for two updates a day!

Our week at the beach was over. It had been great, but we were excited to head to a complete family vacation at our favorite family vacation spot. We left Cocoa Beach on Friday afternoon and headed towards Orlando. Once again we were driving under these gates for a week at Disney!

Our original plans had been to arrive on Saturday, but my family all left the beach Friday so we decided to leave too. However, our DVC reservations did not begin until Saturday evening so we needed a place to stay for the night. Our go to “off property” hotel is Shades of Green. Though it doesn’t seem off property at all because its location is better than most on property resorts. Anyway we pulled into Shades of Green.

Our room was ready so we hauled the overnight luggage in from the car and then we headed off for the afternoon/evening. Since we were at Shades of Green we decided the Magic Kingdom was the place to go. Shades of Green has a nice walking path over to the Poly so we enjoyed our stroll over to the monorail.

Here are some fun flashback shots from the last time we stayed here and walked this trail.

After a quick monorail ride we arrived at our destination! Our top priority as soon as we arrived at the Magic Kingdom was a family photo in front of the castle. So we found a photopass guy and made it happen.

Believe it or not, this is our only family shot in front of the castle this trip. Good thing it is a good one.

John at this point was just itching to finally get on Space Mountain. It was his favorite ride and he hadn’t yet ridden it. So the boys headed over to check out the Space Mountain situation while Wendy and I browsed around Main Street. I have a couple of pictures to prove it. (Taken from my phone so not the best quality.)

We had an early dinner this evening at the Plaza so Wendy and I went over to wait for the boys. Here is Wendy with the castle. Notice her poor peeling face. This represents a parenting fail as I didn’t remind her to reapply at the beach.

I never get tired of this view.

The boys made it back and we headed into the Plaza. I love this place. The food is simple, but I love that I look out the window and see the castle. For me this is a must do every trip. As usual I had the cheesesteak.

Michael loves that Mickeylodeon.

As we finished up our meal at The Plaza I just looked at my family with the castle in the background and smiled. Our third vacation in this never ending vacation had officially begun.

After dinner the boys headed over to Space Mountain to use their fastpasses. This was actually Michael’s first time on Space Mountain so it was an exciting moment. Wendy does not enjoy Space Mountain so we headed elsewhere. I don’t know exactly what we did, but I do know it was in the new Fantasyland. The reason I know this is I had my picture taken with this animated drawing.

I had Dopey on my mind. (Just a reminder that I am running the Dopey in January and I am a little bit scared.) We didn’t hang around the Magic Kingdom too late this day because we had friends to meet. We were heading over to the Poly to meet up with our old friends the Disney Family. (If you’ve read previous trip reports you may remember them.) The Disney Family used to be our neighbors years ago. Then they moved away and now we see them sometimes in Disney World. Tonight we were planning on meeting up and watching Wishes from the Polynesian beach. We arrived and they had a lovely place staked out for us. The kids hadn’t seen each other in several years so it took a few minutes, but they were friends again pretty quick. Liz and I didn’t need any time to get reacquainted. We just started chatting right away.

Poor DH had to just kind of hang out by himself because Liz’s DH was back home working. As we chatted the water parade came by.

Then Wishes started.

I love Wishes. As the last firework faded we heard a blast of thunder. We realized we needed to get moving if we wanted to arrive back at Shades of Green before the deluge began. So we said quick goodbyes and hoofed it back to Shades. I don’t think we’ve ever walked that path so fast. Lightning was flashing all around us, but we made it into the hotel in the nick of time. Literally two minutes after we made it to the lobby the skies opened up and the rain came down. We settled down in our room thankful that we’d missed the storm by the skin of our teeth. As we went to sleep we looked forward to another full Disney day.

You and Wendy really did have some lovely girly time and how wonderful that DH has now joined you!

Too funny about the chicken drumstick bone, kids are funny :rotfl2:

Your week at the beach sounds lovely, well except the sunburn. I hope no-one was in too much pain.

How cool that you got to meet your friends and I'm planning on ordering the Plaza cheesesteak so I'm glad it's yummy :goodvibes

Love the photos of the path at SoG. I'm checking in this Thursday and I'm super excited to see it in someone's trip report since it doesn't seem to come up very often.

Great update! :thumbsup2
Thanks!

Wendy really was in some serious pain with that sunburn. Her face actually was swollen the day after. I felt really bad that I didn't remind her to reapply. I hope you enjoy that cheesesteak. It is what I always get at the Plaza. I'm going to miss it this trip. I traded our Plaza reservation for a fastpass at Be Our Guest because Wendy really wanted to go there. I think I'd rather have lunch at the Plaza.

Yay! We love Shades of Green. The location can't be beat and the rooms are spacious. We are actually staying there for our upcoming trip. The price just can't be beat at Christmas time. I feel like it is such a steal to be staying in that location for $130 a night during Christmas week! I hope you have a fabulous trip!

We awoke this morning and packed our bags. Our one night at Shades of Green was nice, and we knew we would be back soon. We are actually staying there in a couple of weeks. The price is the same year round, so during Christmas it can’t be beat. This morning we were going to introduce DH to Disney water parks. We hopped in the car and headed to Blizzard Beach. We arrived shortly after 9:00. DH still needed to get his water park pass so we headed in while he waited in the short line. While we were waiting John wanted to get this shot.

DH made it through the gates, and after staking out some chairs we decided we would try the family raft ride first. So we hiked up the stairs and pretty much walked on. The lines were definitely shorter in the morning. This ride was lots of fun and it was great that we were all together in our raft. After we finished we headed back up the stairs and rode it again. The kids wanted to ride it a third time, but DH wanted to try out some of the other big slides. So he left us and the kids and I rode it a third time. By this point I was getting tired of all those stairs. The third time was fun, but I didn’t want to climb the stairs again so I vetoed a fourth ride. We headed over to our chairs to wait for DH and he arrived shortly gushing about the slide. He tried to convince the kids to ride it with him, but he could only get John to bite. So DH and John went off to ride Slush Gusher. While DH and John were off to try the big slide, Michael, Wendy and I went to check out the play area. Wendy was a bit too old for this area, but she isn’t a thrill lover so she still had fun. Michael loved it. I loved that there was a photopass guy to take pictures of my kids. Here is Michael jumping the ice bergs and hanging on to the rope bridge.

Here is Wendy on the rope bridge thing. You can tell she is a bit too tall and that the sun was shining in her face.

John and DH made it back from the slide and had a great report. John loved it. He wanted to go again, but the wait was pretty long. We decided we’d try to find a time to get here right at 9:00 one morning so he could go down the slides over and over. The kids then decided they wanted to try the water zipline. Here goes Michael.

Then John.

Last Wendy gave it a try.

Michael and John then headed back to do the water bridge. I remember the line being a bit long, but we weren’t in a hurry so they waited. Michael went first.

Then John

Michael still wasn’t done with this area. He wanted to hop the ice floes again so here he is finishing up.

After this we went over and tried out the medium thrill slides. The racers were fun. The boys went on Downhill Double Dipper and had a great report. By this point the lines were starting to get pretty long so we decided we’d head over to check into Animal Kingdom villas and hope that our room was ready. If not we would just hop in the pool because we were already in our suits. On the way out we stopped for some of those yummy donuts. This waterpark trip was a success. So the waterparks basically have the same secret as the theme parks. Show up in the morning. Anyway we made the short drive to Animal Kingdom Kidani. Would our villa be ready?

Hey there! I'm back!

All caught up! :thumbsup2

I'm glad your whole family was reunited for the rest of the trip.

HDDR looks like a lot of fun. I'm really tempted to try it next time.

You got some great water park pictures. Wow!

The one whole-family castle picture turned out great! :woohoo:

I'm excited to see your Kidani villa. :goodvibes

You have been an updating machine and it took me a while to catch up. Yay for your husband arriving, spending a week at the beach, and going back to Disney again. I believe that we are going to add the water parks to our trip again this trip. It's been a year or two since we've been and your pictures have me longing for them.

Trying to catch up again! Now if I can stay caught up…
Don’t you just wish Mary Poppins would magically pop in one day! Maybe if I start disciplining in a British accent that would work. I’m sure the girls would just think “Mom’s lost it again”!

Wow, water rationing in line for BOG? That would have made me giggle too! Wow no interaction with Gaston? That seems odd, we’ve never met him but everyone talks about how great his interactions are.

How cute is that Fort Wilderness merchandise? I’d love to see all the decorations the campers have up for Christmas now.

Wow, what a hole the boys dug in the beach! It’s been a long time since I have been to the space center but it is much more enjoyable than you expect.

Oh, the water parade and fireworks at the Poly beach…I’m afraid of the changes that they are making over there and that this might be no more. I can’t think of a better way to end a day.

Christine

Caught up for now. Two updates a day I'm going to get behind again.:rolleyes1 So I will wish you a magical trip now. Can't wait to finish reading this trip and start on your next.

Welcome back! (Not that you were gone for long. I was just on an update tear!) HDDR is a lot of fun, but it's pricey enough that it won't be a regular thing for us. I loved the castle picture too. I'm going to have to make sure to go out of my way on this next trip to get more whole family shots in front of the castle. The Kidani villa update is coming right up!

The water parks are great. They are a nice diversion from that heat! I don't know how much we'll visit them during this upcoming trip though. It might be a bit too chilly.

There are many days I think Mary Poppins would make a nice addition, but I don't think the English accent alone would work.:rotfl: The water rationing was just killing me. It made the time in line just fly by because I was laughing so hard with the family next to me about it. Love those kind of moments! We are actually planning on getting over to the campground during Christmas to see some of the lights. I want to do run around there. We'll see if it actually happens. (You know how sometimes plans change on vacation.) We'll have to see how the Polynesian villas end up impacting the beach. I do think it will bring some change and could make it even more crowded. Only time will tell for sure I guess.

Great trip report! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for joining in.

I think I was a bit ambitious with the two updates a day thing. Now I've just accepted the fact that I won't get this report finished before my next trip. At least then I can finish this one up when I get back instead of starting a new one and stalling while I wait on the photopass, right?

After a short ride we pulled into Animal Kingdom Kidani Village. Wendy and I headed inside to check in and guess what? Our room was ready! That made us very happy because we were all in our swim suits. So we headed to our spacious villa where we would spend the next week. Here are some pictures of the villa.

The rooms are nice, but we were more interested in what was outside. We walked out on the balcony and these guys greeted us.

Can’t beat that. Here is Michael with the view.

This is Michael’s favorite place to stay at Disney so he was very excited about those giraffes. We spent this afternoon just relaxing and settling into our home for the next week. I went grocery shopping because we had a full kitchen. I bought breakfast food and dinner for a night or two. That is a nice perk of the villas. For dinner this evening we met up with our friends the Disneys. We kept it local and met them at Boma. Yum yum! I didn’t take any pictures, but here are a few I took from the food thread.

These lovely pictures were taken with phones so they aren’t the highest quality, but you get the idea. We just hung out around the resort and generally had a relaxing evening chatting. Eventually we said goodbye to our friends, but I will see Liz very soon. We are doing the Dopey next month! We headed back to our villa for another night of Disney dreams.

Love the villa and view pics! I really want to stay at AKL or Kidani one day. I always worry about the transportation, but I think I've gotten over that. I just need to get a good rate, and we'll be there - has to be savannah-view though! :thumbsup2

Sounds like y'all had a nice, relaxing evening at the resort. Perfect!

Yeah for AKL! I used to be one of those "it's too far away to stay there people", then we tried it for a short visit and now I love the fact that it's far away. It truly seems like a resort with so much to do there. I also think it has the best dining options of all the resorts. We have always had really good luck with the transportation as well, never any longer than anyplace else.

We stayed in a studio in Jambo house our last visit and it was so nice to wake up and see the animals in the morning. I'm cheap - I won't normally pay for a view but each time we have stayed there we have had some animal view. Last time we were at the very end of the trail back where the animal barn is, not a sweeping savanna view by any means but we did get to watch the animals wait for breakfast and the keepers interact with the animals more so I thought that was a bonus in itself. So, for anyone hestiating to stay here, don't. OK, I'm getting off my pro-AKL soapbox!
