Do you know any former or current Olympic athletes?

An old friend of mine that I had some classes with and worked with on class projects back in college is on the Lithuania basketball team this year. I still have to cheer for the good ol' USA, but would like to see him get the silver.

A distant cousin of my husband's won the gold medal in 400m hurdles in 1964. He is being inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame next month. We were going to meet him there (a friend of ours runs the MSHoF) but we are going to be in Vero Beach that week.

My kids' archery coach was an Olympic runner up, I guess. He came in 4th at the trials and trained at the Olympic village, but didn't actually compete in the Olympics. He did have a friend come talk to the kids at practice one night who did compete in the Olympics. I don't remember which year, though.

My friend from HS was on the Olympic team for track (I think in 2000...) but she didn't make it to the finals (so not on television).

I used to work for a guy who went to the Maccabi Games... which is pretty big too. an ultramarathoner (crazy!)

We know some former swimmers, gymnasts and a speed skater.
Friend of ours just missed making the Olympic swim team this year.

I didn't know him, but distance runner Steve Prefontaine used to run right past me many mornings when I walked to Jr High in the '70s.

My brother had a roommate that was a Hungarian wrestling champion, and went on to the Olympics. I can't remember if he medaled or not, but I think he did, as he now has a home and stipend from the government until he dies (or the government enacts austerity measures and does away with those stipends!).

My Uncle (mom's brother) was the top wrestler (in Europe) back in his day. He had beaten all the Olympic wrestlers that year at the World Championships, and earned a place on the Hungarian team. Unfortunately, because his sister (my mom) had recently escaped their country, he was not given permission to travel and compete at the Olympics. The winner that year was a wrestler that my Uncle had never lost to.

Until his dying day, my Uncle did harbor resentment against my mom over this. However, even though he didn't go to the Olympics, he never had to work a day in his life, and after his wrestling career ended, he spent the rest of his life training wrestlers at the stadium in his hometown. He was taken care of, and his widow still receives a stipend due to her husband's glory days. But he never did get a chance to get that gold!

Two current Olympians work at my company! I don't know them personally, but our company has helped support them tremendously during their workouts and tryout process. They were able to work adjusted schedules so they could participate in daily morning and afternoon workouts, and they have been given ample time off this summer for tryouts, training and the actual Olympics.

We are all excited to root them on!

Foluke Akinradewo, Bradley Ally, Vladislav Polyakov, Sanya Richards-Ross, Seilala Sua. They all went to my high school and I had class with a couple of them.

I used to babysit a boy who went on to be an Olympic swimmer (1996,Atlanta). Just think, I used to wipe his little nose!

I've met quite a few Olympic skaters (oldest daughter used to skate). Most of them are very short, LOL! (Except Evan Lysacek ;) )

I have not met her but Jordyn Weiber lives in the next town over from us, a 3 mile walk away. Her name is pasted all over Mid Michigan and we only wish her the best! I know girls have taken classes with her.

Have known a number. Went to college with one but I forget what the sport was; it was one of your less-glamorous sports. Also was in college with a former Miss America contestant - much more memorable, much more scary. :lmao:

Oh, HA!

My uncle is going to kill me for forgetting this.

My uncle was an alternate on the Olympic Bowling Team when it was a considered sport. I forget what year it was, could have been 1984?

Hahaha! I wore the Miss America crown for an hour! I was working in a small post production studio and we were doing the opening and interstitials. We needed the crown to shoot an insert shot of the crown on a pillow (I know, REAL creative there...). It was during my lunch break and the producer let me wear it as long as I didn't leave the room. It doesn't stay on unless you have 15 bobby pins.

My uncle was an Olympic cyclist representing the all Ireland team in Rome in 1960. He didn't win, and he never spoke much about it, but I know it was a real highlight of his cycling career and his life.
