Would you buy a chevy?

We have a 2000 Chevy Venture Van. It has over 150,000 miles on it and we are getting ready to hand it down to DS16. We have never had any real trouble with it.

I would not hesitate to buy one.

My dh has been buying GM cars since 1986 starting with (don't laugh) his Pontiac Fiero which he still has!!! Then he went to the Pontiac Grand Prix & has owned 3 of them since then. Sadly we just traded it in this past November, it was a 2000 that he bought in Nov 1999. He had 66K on it so someone got a great car.

I started buying GM in 1997 with a GMC Jimmy, followed by an Envoy in 2005. We still have the Envoy & love it but now we bought a Dodge van which we pretty much hate because it isn't Americanized (OK GMized) inside. The steering wheel doesn't move the right way, the buttons for the air/heat are too far out of reach. It isn't a comfortable car but it fits the kids.

So as soon as we can ditch the van, we are going back to a GM car, either a Chevy or a GM. But that won't be for another 10 years...

Oh & I also have a friend who had a Chevy Venture. She loved it but it was getting old & having problems so she had to get rid of it. She got a used Honda Odessy & said it isn't the same. The Chevy had all these little hidden extras/luxuries/comforts that the Honda does not.

My husband has a 2006 Silverado. He is Chief of our local volunteer Fire department, drives both dodge and ford with the fire department, and wants a new silverado when his bites the dust. It has 108,000 miles on it and runs fantastic. Hasn't needed any major repairs at all, nothing more than 200 dollars... Go with the Chevy...

I love my Chevy. I have a 2001 Venture that we bought used in '06. It has almost 200K miles on it and (knock wood) we haven't had any major issues with it, just brakes and belts and normal "wearing out" maintenance. The most expensive repair we've had to do was a few hundred dollars to repair a short and replace the rear window wiper motor, and that wasn't necessary in the strictest sense - the van was running fine, but I didn't like not having that rear window wiper.

We actually had plans to buy a new van (new to us, anyway - we buy late-model used and don't finance) in '09, but my Venture runs so well that we found a better use for that money. I'd like some of the features of a newer model, but it isn't worth enough to me to spend $$$$ on replacing a perfectly serviceable vehicle.

We are seriously looking at the Chevy Cruze ourselves. We think it looks really good.

We try to by GM cars when we can (they don't offer a minivan anymore :( ....so last car we bought was a Honda Van). We also own a Buick Rendezvous (which they also don't make anymore :( ).

Of the three, I would go with either the Hyundai or the KIA. The reason, Hyudai/KIA (same company) offers a 10 year / 100K mile warranty on the powertrain. Chevy's is only 5 year / 100K mile. However, it all depends on how long you are planning on keeping the car since the Hyundai/KIA warranty does not transfer. Thus, the resale value on the Hyundai/KIAs is not very good.

I bought a 2010 Chevy Equinox last year and I love it!!

I had a Chevy Venture which lasted nearly 10+ years and close to 150,000 miles when we finally decided to trade it in for a Chevy Equinox. I am completely in love with the Equinox. It was one of the few vehicles that met all of our requirements.

I've been quite happy with my Chevy products. No complaints here.

Same here.. I have a 2002 Chevy Venture for 5 1/2 years now. My son also has a chevy Lumini and hubby has a Ford.

Have no problems with any Chevy we have had.

Yup, just bought a Chevy Traverse last week.

We will only buy Subarus and Hondas (and possibly a Ford) in the future.

Burned too many times by Chrysler and GM products. Loved my GM van but when the transmission was going out for the third time, that was it for me.

DH has a Malibu. It started having problems at 40K like the fuel guage breaking. Worst car ever.

In someone cries lemon, maybe, but it was also overpriced and the resale value isn't there either.

Maybe I'm spoiled, but neither of these are exactly ringing endorsements to me. I drive an '06 Honda Pilot with 80K miles and I've never had to make any repairs, warranty or not.

My sway bar problem was 100% that I live on a dirt road that's often got pits and holes big enough to swallow small dogs, and I'm not always careful driving down it. Or at least I wasn't before this. :P

I'm with you. I have a 2000 Honda with 125,000 miles and so far only 1 repair and my husband was able to do it. I've seen Chevy's in and out of the shop while I'm driving along. My mother in law had a Buick that was always falling apart while my mom's 22+ year old Honda was going strong.

I would ask him why he said not to buy one and continue the conversation.

It's possible he was making that comment based on the government bail out. If that's the case, it's up to you to decide your on thoughts on the politics.

If it was based on the Chev vehicles themselves, that's different. No matter what veh you ask about, you will find lovers and haters. Some based on emotion, some based on personal experience, some based on what they have heard...the reasons go on and on.

Personally, I have never been a huge Chevy fan, but it's just a personal preference, just like I don't like a black car....doesn't mean they are less in any way. I mostly bought Pontiacs. Don't know what I will do now that they have been discontinued.

Some folks just plain won't buy American. Others will only buy American. I personally would never write off American veh's. Some are good, some are bad. I don't happen to like foreign cars...they seem foreign to me...too different to what I'm used to.

If you do your research on the vehicle you want and like what you see/hear, then buy what you like. I wouldn't be afraid to buy a Chevy.

Nope, not after the problems we had with my Equinox.

Timeline (NOT INCLUDING BASIC MAINTANENCE, LIKE OIL CHANGES IN THIS LIST, ONLY THE EXTRA WORK THAT HAD TO BE DONE; ALL WORK WAS DONE AT EITHER THE DEALERSHIP WE BOUGHT THE CAR AT IN LAS VEGAS OR THE CHEVY DEALER BY MY HOUSE IN JACKSONVILLE)

-bought Feb 06, brand new, less than 100 miles on it
--March 06, replaced battery (warranty)
--June 06, replaced battery and alternator (warranty)
--Nov 06, replaced brake pads, was told originial ones were installed incorrectly and that the rotors had to be resurfaced (warranty)
--Nov 07, replaced rotors--moved to Jax in Dec.
--May 08, replaced battery
--May 08, replaced alternator (warranty)
--July 08, driving down highway in massive rainstorm, cruise control on. car dies. Restart, start driving, car "sputters" for the remainder of the drive home (going from St. Petersburg to Jacksonville). Dealer says nothing wrong. :confused3
--Aug 08, "rear window seal" fails, needs to be replaced (warranty); inside floorboards of car are soaked due to leakage (dealer does nothing to carpets); cd/radio sputters and ac/heat kicks on and off randomly (checked, told nothign is wrong)
--Sept 08, door seals on rear doors are replaced (warranty)
--Sept 08, "rear window seal" is again leaking, inside floorboards of car are again soaking wet. Removed carpeting/padding, dried inside w/industrial fans. Replaced window seal. Replaced carpeting/padding. Still having the problems with the cd/radio and the ac/heat. Once again, told nothing is wrong.
--Sept 08, car again sputters and dies while driving on a highway in a thunderstorm w/cruise control. Dealer again says they cannot duplicate the problem (drove in town, no storm, w/o cruise control on).
--Oct 08, car again sputters and dies while driving on highway, thunderstorm, cruise control. Experiments at home figure that driving between 45-75 w/cruise control during heavy rain cause the shut down. Research on internet shows we are not the only people with this problem, yet chevy still says there is no design flaw.
--Oct 08, the "rear seal" leaks again--turns out to not be the rear seal, but a gap in the front between the engine compartment and the dashboard. The entire electrical system in the dashboard, including heater/ac, radio/cd player shuts down and needs to be replaced, due to water in the wiring. I'm told "I should have mentioned the problems with the electrical system when I brought it in for the other problems". :headache:

Sold the car back to the dealer. Never again.

Add me to the big no vote.

I grew up owning Cavaliers, I never had one last more than 110K without major problems, the newest one became a money pit.
My wife owned a Beretta when I met her and it lost the transmission at 103K.

We went with Saturn.
My 2002 SL lasted 276,000 miles and I gave it to my niece. The only repair was the water pump.
Our 2003 Vue was traded for a 2008 Vue as it was our main vehicle and we like to keep the mileage low for our longer trips. Neither vehicle ever saw the mechanic outside of oil changes and tire rotations, we put 150K on both.

After GM abandoned Saturn, we abandoned GM.

Our new vehicle is a Mazda CX-7.

My vote is no due to both quality and management issues.

My husband has always been a die hard chevy man! I have owned many chevy's over the past 20 years and all have been pretty good cars. I currently own a 2008 chevy malibu and I love the car but my last car was a Hyundai that I owned for 8 years and put 175000 miles on and really had no major issues. I truly thought it was a great car and you can not beat their warranty. That to me is the only draw back with a chevy. (althought any chevy I have owned always has brake and rotor problems). I bought my malibu used 1 year ago and the warranty was out. My husband has a 2004 Chevy hd2500 and it has been a very good vehicle also. Agree with another poster that if you are only going to keep vehicle for a few years it is ok, but if you are looking for something for the long haul I would go with Hyundia. Good luck!

I've had my car for 12 years and it's a 1999 Chevy Malibu..bought it brand new with 24 miles on it...it currently has 124,500 miles on it... I have had NO problems with it in the 12 years I've owened it!!!

Go with the Chevy IMO. I have always have good luck with Chevrolet
(former Camaro, Malibu, Chevette, truck, NOva & Aveo owner) and recently sold my 07 Aveo to my son. Nothing but great luck with the car but I sold it just because my son needed a good car. We bought a VW New Beetle because I has always thought they were cute. Nothing wrong with owning the VW but I miss my Chevy!

ABSOLUTELY I would buy a Chevy. DH has almost 200,000 miles on his Cobalt and it will be passed on to DS when he gets his license. The only issue we've had with it was caused by a wayward deer

DH will likely buy a Cruze when he passes on the Cobalt. The only reason I say "likely" is because he really wants a Camaro and is still trying to convince me to get that instead.
