It's a beautiful day here in central Indiana. Have been outside cutting up a couple of logs for firewood for next winter. I took a tree down in our yard last fall, and have let it lie there all winter long curing. Now the shorter pieces can cure all summer long and be ready to burn come winter. I'm taking a break to post a few more "vintage" WDW shots that I found last night. These are from a trip I took in 1992. Again, these are things you won't see there today - or the views are drastically different...
Now the Pleasure Island 24 - back then it was just the Pleasure Island 10, though it may have just been AMC 10 - I haven't been able to put my fingers on my guide maps from that trip just yet. Perhaps someone else remembers that bit of trivia. It has been AMC all along. Know what's missing from the foreground of the shot?? Planet Hollywood. Back then the movie theatre was the western most edge of the Shopping Village/Pleasure Island complex.
The old queue for IASW with the old flat background. It was updated in 2006 to more closely resemble the exterior queue found at DL, with more dimension to it, and adding in the large clock.
Here's the current version and the DL exterior shots for comparison
WDW 2010
DL 2009 - (this is from last Christmas, the only one I could locate right now, but it still shows the idea)
Another classic Skyway shot, looking down over 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. In the background you see the "temporary" tents of Mickey's Birthdayland that was quickly designed and opened in 1988 (to commemorate Mickey's 60th) by this point had given way to what became Mickey's Starland... later to be rethemed as Mickey's Toontown Fair after the immediate success of Mickey's Toontown at Disneyland. Toontown (at DL) was then officially known as the fab five's permanent home, while Toontown Fair (at WDW) became known as their "country" or "vacation" homes. Just a little Toontown trivia for you. Those temporary tents sure have been around for a while - but will of course finally come down with the upcoming Fantasyland renovations/expansion.
The old West Center Street, before it was walled up and turned into more retail space for the Emporium turning the entire west side of Main Street into a single, mall, like shop. Back then there was a flower market towards the back of this "side street", and the barbershop was located back there as well, instead of the location it currently occupies in Town Square.
The Tomorrowland Skyway Station, recently finally removed. Check out the signage over the entrance queue for Space Mtn!
Exiting the old Journey into Imagination ride ( okay - everybody now... "One little spark of inspiration..." Anyway - you used to exit the ride to the UPSTAIRS Image Works play area, before you went downstairs for more, and then over to Captain Eo!
The old interior of the current Sunshine Seasons reastaurant in The Land prior to the renovations that came in 2004 in preparation for Soarin' to open in 2005.
The original sign (& name) at the entrance to Port Orleans: Riverside. Back in those days there were no security booths at each of the resorts, and it was much easier and quicker to drive in to any resort and snap some photos, eat in a restaurant or just pay a visit.
