Hey WISHers, I just posted this on my Facebook page, but I thought I would share it here since this group has been such an inspiration to me. Maybe I can pay it back by inspiring someone who is thinking about running next year.

First of all, I finished. I’m not fast, but I finished. I thought I could make it between 2:45 and 3 hours, but all bets went out the window with the sleet, rain, and freezing temps.

I finished in 2:59:31. Yes I’m slow. If you have ever either:
a) Finished a half or full marathon at a faster pace,
or
b) kept your body in continuous aerobic motion for 3 hours, please feel free to make fun of me. If not, sit down! :)

The first 20 minutes of every run sucks. Then it gets better.

The terms “record freeze” and “Marathon weekend’ should never be uttered in the same sentence.

Layers are good – I waited outside for 2 hours before the race started wearing running tights, sweatpants, long sleeve running shirt, long sleeve t-shirt, fleece, sweatshirt, blanket, trash bag, 2 headbands, gloves and hand warmers.

Port-a-potty lines are much longer when it is cold. See layers above.

A yard size trash bag is “ball gown length” on a 5’2” person and “tea length” on a 6’ tall person.

Dance party at 4-5am is fine since it is not technically morning – it is still party time.

High school friends – remember the reasonably athletic girl who almost failed the 12 minute run in 10th grade? Yeah, that’s me.

I’m glad I didn’t carry my room key with me. Running past Bay Lake Tower at mile 4 just might have been too tempting.

Pot holes are bad.

People with funny sayings on the back of their shirts are good.

Thank goodness for bright red nail polish. I think I have at least 2 black toenails.

Volunteers are awesome. They had to have been really, really cold, but they were still out there. Same with the spectators.

Dressing in Tinkerbell colors helps. I don’t know why, but it does.

Always, always, always skip up Main Street – even if it is mile 6.

Fun-size Snickers make great “energy bars”.

The lounge singer set up at the end of the Grand Floridian driveway may be the funniest thing I’ve ever seen. Come on Baby Light My Fire.

Knowing the exact location of every restroom in every Disney park is a distinct race advantage.

Thank you to the gentleman on the side of the road playing the accordion during a particularly boring part of the course. And his wife who held the umbrella.

Highway on ramps are very, very bad. I will never look at the ramp to EPCOT the same way again.

“Keep it together, M.” moment #1: running behind two women wearing shirts with “Run for Our Sons” on the back…right past their family cheering section including two teen boys in wheelchairs.

At least once in your life, you should go to the finish line of a local half, full, or triathlon. If you do that, you will realize that Finishers come in all shapes, sizes, ages, and speeds.

Take candy from strangers. I am thankful for the lady with Twizzlers at mile 12.

Every race should have a gospel choir .1 mile from the finish.

“Keep it together, M.” moment #2: crossing the finish line.

If you are even at Disney World during Marathon Weekend, don’t mind the person shivering on the monorail. I probably looked like I had rickets or something.

There is an advantage to having a husband who is fast. Our room was a toasty 80 degrees when I arrived.

Never ride Space Mountain the day after a race. It is impossible to get out of that car.

I’m not a runner. I will never be a runner – but it is good to set goals and even better to achieve them.

Yeah, I’ll do it again next year.

Who else is in?

Im running the princess in march as my first 1/2. I will be 7 months + 5 days post op from major cervical surgery on my neck. I am proud to say I have a plate + 6 screws and cadaver bone in my neck and fused from C4-C7!!

My goal is to finish my race as a milestone for regaining my life after this surgery, and to prove to others and my 4 children anything is possible!!

Like you I am not fast, I am hoping to finish between 2:30 and 2:45 - so if you are doing the princess let me know :)

Congrats on just doing it!!

Yes, yes and Yes!! Good things that you picked out!

And of course I will be there next year!

I'm in! This is a great summary and lots of fun! I especially like the part about the different length trash bag gowns!

I finished in 2009 at about the same pace you did this year - it is not easy at any pace, and this weekend, I think the longer you were out there, the tougher it was in respect to the weather.

Congratulations on finishing!!!

I finished the half as my 11th ( and second slowest) half marathon less than a minute ahead of you. At that rate, you are a runner.
I ran with more layers than ever before and the only one I dropped was my poncho each day.
Congrats on finishing your race!!

This was super fun to read, thanks for writing and sharing.

Congratulations on finishing! Your time doesn't matter. Most people will not go to their mailbox in the weather you and countless other endured last weekend. That is inspiring stuff, my friend, and you were a part of that.

Again, thanks for the great read.

I love this one! It is so true!!

Congratulations on your awesome finish in horrible conditions and thanks for your great post - I laughed out loud more than once. I sure hope to be back next year. If I can make it I think I may run the half and volunteer for the full. Just keep your fingers crossed that they change the weekend for my daughter's dance competition! :thumbsup2

Congrats on your awesome achievement:cool1: I loved your observations and hope to see you at future events.

We are all with you, it's not about your time on the course, it's about getting out there and challenging yourself. Be proud of yourself, you did it.

Congratulations on finishing the race!! I have always wanted to run the 1/2 at WDW and your sharing is great!! Makes me want to do it even more!!

Congrats on finishing!! :cheer2::cheer2:

Good observation about the layers! I run at home in the cold and snow and wasn't really prepared. I wore clothing that I normally would run in but never thought about waiting around in the cold for an hour. Usually at home, I'm out the door and running in less than a few minutes. So I don't really think about keeping warm. Oh - I had my room key too and thought about running back to my room as well :)

I'm going to give the full a try next year so I'll be back but not in the 1/2.:scared1:

Beautifully written and :rotfl: funny!

I'm in...already registered for 2011!

The difference between a jogger and a runner is the entry form

Good show

BTW, your first half was about 20 min faster than mine way back when. Everyone starts somewhere.

i love your first sentence. mind if i borrow it?

you should be proud of yourself! how many don't even try at all? loved your report!

You are so definitely a runner -
Loved your observations and agreed with many of them...
I also thought the same thing around mile 8 passing the Poly.. Even teased DH and asked him if he would carry my sneaker (and dtag) to the finish while I went back to bed....:rotfl2::rotfl2:

Disney was just my 2nd half - and while I would have loved to PR - it just wasn't going to happen between the sheer number of runners starting in Coral C - to the weather and to the mere fact that I was enjoying the journey.. But even finishing 16 minutes slower, I enjoyed the race very much.

I unfortunately won't be back in 2011 - I have a goal for 2010 to have 12 1/2's and just can't justify doing the same one twice right now, then add that the short 4-5 day race weekend was very expensive, even with the generous military discount park tickets.. I want to travel to other destinations and running is my ticket.

I love this list! If you haven't already planned, you should print it and put it with your photos from the race. :thumbsup2

I'm training and looking forward to running my first half (hopefully Food & Wine) and especially enjoyed this comment:

Me too!

LOVE IT!!! This was the best read I have had in a while....

btw... You did not take candy from a stranger.. I am a WISHer :) That was me at Mile 12 handing out the twizzlers... I am sooooo happy that I decided to head to 12 after being back by the POLY for a while.. couldn't get close to the runners with the new set up they had... so I decided to head over to EPCOT for a while.. I was going to go inside.. but then realized the park wasn't open yet.. and headed over towards mile 12..... it was a very popular spot!! LOL!!!

You totally cracked me up with the Porta Potty line .... That is soooo true.. didn't even think about that.. but.. DUH.. of course!! LOL Congrats on your great race!!! :)

Kathy

We did the 5k this year (mostly walking). Seeing the finishers of the half was completely inspiring. I am signing up for next year. I absolutely loved hearing your thoughts. Quite inspiring!

AWESOME race report!!

and I knew the Gospel Choir was there in '08, but would they be there '10? For me - they were "memorex" it still meant a lot!! It was hard being out there for 4 hours moving - but I was fine, my dh waiting for me at the finish line, not so much!!

Oh, and also know which bathrooms at MK were closed for renovations,( :confused3) and which only have 2 stalls and long lines - important!! :thumbsup2

Not only are you a great writer, but you ARE a runner! No doubt about that.

I was called "Klutz" by my junior high gym teacher, so I'm with you on the teenage memories of not being too fast and athletic. My marathon was slow, but I did it, and boy would I love to find that gym teacher and let her have a look at my shiny new medal that I worked so hard to get!

Thanks for the great read.
Cheers!
