mary poppins costume

The real Mary's sleeves are 3/4 but on my little girl they are full length. There is a reason behind that. I used to put dance leotards on under her costumes....

Thanks for the ladiesroom/leotard tip! My princess has a bladder of steel, but with three babes (ages 1, 2 and 3) and tackling the park solo bi-weekly, that would not be easy! You totally saved me a stress sit, in the ladiesroom! I will definitely be getting long sleeves for fall/winter!

Iwould love to see your outfit finished i talked to a lady who has made dresses for me and sent some pictures to her i am hoping she will make me one i didnt ask if she has a pattern but she may id love to see the fabric i expect a bridal shop would have a lot of pretty embroidered organza to use.:cool1: :cool1:

still working on mine and we leave the 31st for wdw and will be attending MNSSHP so I am feeling the pressure. I decided to buy a lace dress on ebay and make it work. I bought some red satin for the sash, white ribbon for the stripes on it and some red ribbons for the bows. I have a white straw hat and I'll drape it with lace and attach red ribbons.

I forget who talked about the Mary Poppins show but we saw it last year on Broadway and my daughter still talks about it all the time. It was great but you should know that it is based on the book not the disney movie and the story is different and a little darker.

hello, everyone. I am the "Auntie" that poohnpigletCA is speaking of.
I got my daughter off to college yesterday and promptly left town to visit with my sister - but I'm almost back home.

Since I'm not quite there, I don't have pattern info in front of me. However, here are a few things you need to know:

* When I make costumes for the children, I ALWAYS use machine washable fabrics. They get filthy dirty, and it's so easy to just throw them in the wash! I also NEVER use 100% cotton. Who wants to iron costumes?

* Mary Poppins is actually TWO dresses, tacked together at the waistline.

* I usually use a cotton broadcloth on the more casual costumes...Cinderella in rags, Belle in blue...and for Mary Poppins' underdress.

* I rarely use zippers. Velcro strips are my best friend.

* Yes, I actually do use Simplicity 9497, but only partially, for the overdress. Of this pattern, I only use the bodice and sleeves...however, I cut the front of the bodice a bit higher, and I do not put a band or elastic on the sleeves. This is to accomodate the lace with the ribbon entwined. This overderess is made out of an inexpensive lace. I've been known to purchase lace curtain panels on clearance at Target and will actually use them for this dress!
I'm all about saving money.

* The pattern I use for the underdress is at home...as I said, I am not. As soon as I can, I will give you that pattern number. Basically it's just a sleeveless dress with a circle skirt. (I believe that on the front of the pattern the dress is in green with purple polka dots or something like that)

I hope this helps so far! I promise, tomorrow morning (or really late tonight) I'll post more.

Thanks for your compliments. I really do this out of love for two very special little girls and their mommy.

I forgot to mention the sash! Mary Poppin's sash does not have a bow, but I thought it looked so pretty hanging down the back of the dress.

The sash I made is out of crepe-back satin. I just cut the shape myself - then I added piping to the front and cut another piece the same size. Don't start by cutting two pieces thinking it will save you time! You have to make cuts in the front panel of the sash to add the vertical piping - so cut the back side AFTER you've sewn in the piping. Does that make sense?

Also, use a VERY heavy interfacing for the front of the sash. You want it to almost stand up by itself.

More later...

hello, everyone. I am the "Auntie" that poohnpigletCA is speaking of.

Congrats on your baby going to college! Bitter sweet I'm sure! I was teary eyed leaving her at ballet princess camp for 2 1/2 hours! Hard to see your baby growing up. but, great minds think alike with the patterns! :) I did the exact same thing for the extended bodice, sleeves minus elastic and adding red lace trim. Thank you so much for all the other tips! especially the velcro backing! I usually always do zippers for a more fitted look, but when she grows the velcro will be very beneficial! did you add the hoop skirt under or layer with costume fabrics?

Hi Fairygoodmother and welcome :wave2:

Yes velcro is great because it allows me to put shirts on under costumes and I think her Mary Poppins will fit again this year. It was made last October and would not fit this year if it had a zipper. It is getting a little short :rolleyes1

But I would not ask Fairygoodmother to make a new one. Seeing as how she is making my youngest a Mary Poppins, and Bo Peep, and a Christmas Belle for the oldest, oh and a Belle in the pink dress with hood. Yeah, and she just made the Fairygodmother and 2 Belle's for their Grandfathers wedding.....

This is all such a coincidence. It turns out I had purchased that exact Simplicity pattern a couple months ago, but I am nowhere near a competent enough seamstress to figure out how to make it work for the MP dress. But it was the closest thing I could find in any of the pattern books. SO now I have emailed my sister a link to this thread so she can read it and see if she wants to give it a shot. So thanks for all the info so far!:worship: :worship: :worship:

Hi! I LOVE all the discussion about the Mary Poppins Jolly Holiday costumes. I am the creator and seller of the one on Ebay with the "crazy" price.

We took our Mary Poppins with us to Disney in January and had an amazing time. When my daughter arrived on Main Street, they actually brought Mary and Bert out to see US! The costume still fits and will come along again in December this year, but we are in search of the same boots in a larger size. For us, style trumps comfort, even at Disney. I take all my pictures, THEN my daughter changes for comfort. And I carry the big tote bag full of costumes, shoes, hats, etc. But it's SO worth the pictures we bring home!

Good luck to all of you in putting together your special costumes!

Hello mom2rtk! First let me say, I checked out your costumes and dresses...I have so much respect and admiration for your work...I could never do what you do. :cheer2: I guess I don't have enough self-confidence in my own work!

* Okay, so the pattern that I use for the underdress is McCall's M5372. It's a stitch 'n save, so at least it's cheap! As I said, I make it out of cotton broadcloth - a poly/cotton blend. I use the skirt of this pattern for the overdress out of lace as well.

* Depending on the size you're using, it may or may not "fit" onto the bodice of the other pattern. If it doesn't, then take a couple of tucks in whichever part needs them - skirt or bodice - to make it fit.

* Mary Poppins' dress is NOT gathered at the waist. Your sash should hide any tucks that you take.

* I leave the back of the overdress open -no velcro (I'm afraid it will fray the lace). I use a snap or hook and eye at the top to close it.

I'll be happy to answer any additional questions...I hope I've helped! :)

fairygodmother...
thank you so much for all your advice! its nice to have a helping hand (or message :) for someone who can sew and is still learning new tricks. and your costumes are amazing!

Congrats on your baby going to college! Bitter sweet I'm sure!

...did you add the hoop skirt under or layer with costume fabrics?

As for the daughter going to college, this is her 2nd year. She is in Oklahoma. I had home schooled her throughout her school years, so having her leave home was tough the first time. This summer she (and her boyfriend) studied abroad in Europe with 24 other students. While there, he proposed at the Eiffel Tower. So this time her leaving is different. I know that when she comes home in the summer it will only be for a short while

About the dress...I believe that poohnpigletCA has a link somewhere above for a similar slip to the type the girls wear under their costumes. Ours were actually square dancing slips that my older daughter wore under some of her dance costumes. Try here:

designs4dancers.com/MalcoModePetticoat-3.aspx

They will rech the floor on most little girls. Our girls are 7 and 4 and the slips are still perfect; the waist is adjustable with a velcro strip.

oops meant to also say we Love you Fairygoodmother. :lovestruc
Thanks for the other costumes today, yes we are sooooooooooo lucky to have you.

Many thanks for the kind comments Fairy Godmother! I am having a ball creating many of my favorite Disney costumes. Selling them in my store is a great excuse for all the fun things I want to make. I just finished a pair of pink and blue Sleeping Beauty gowns for my daughter and her friend for our trip in December.

Poohnpiglet, that yellow Belle gown is gorgeous! I also added fabric roses to my most recent version for my daughter and love the look. Is that done from a crushed velvet?

My next challenge is to recreate Belle's yellow gown from the park as closely as possible. I have some yellow organza and some yellow satin and am just waiting for some time to work on it!

mom2rtk

mom2rtk, Belle's gown is brocade with the exception of the crushed velvet bodice.

I would love to see your re-creation of the park gown...but which one? There are several different versions. It seems that each park has one or two, each different from the other parks. :confused3

No one has mentioned the parasol that Mary carries. We got ours at a local costume shop for about $8.00. poohnpigletCA then hand stitched red tulle to every other section (unfortunately, that's the extent of her sewing ability ;) )
That's okay, though. I absolutely HATE hand sewing and it's very difficult for me. I've had 6 separate surgeries on my hands with another one scheduled for 9/15. yuck! I wouldn't be able to do this at all if it weren't for people willing to do the hand sewing for me!

Fairy godmother do you use a pattern for the Belle dress i have never seen one so beautifully made as yours .Have you ever thought of selling them or is it to much work very stunning,.Ihave a lady who makes dresses and she does it professionally her dresses are not aspretty as yours.

Fairygodmother, the gown is stunning! I love the brocade! You must have access to better fabrics than we do here in the midwest. It is my single greatest frustration with the dress biz. I'd post a picture of my most recent Belle, but I just joined and can't post a picture until I've had 10 posts. If you look for my pictures on flickr.com, you can see the gown. I used a yellow satin sprinkled with gold glitter for that one. I wish I had more of that fabric!

The one I want to copy is the basic yellow one Belle appears in to sign autographs. We've been to both coasts several times and it appears to be fairly similar each time. It's the same as the one Belle is wearing in your picture. I got close on the neckline with my most recent one.

When we visited Hollywood Studios, we stopped to take pictures in front of the hat in the gown, and someone came over from Guest Relations to admire the dress. They then asked us to be grand marshalls in the parade (before Stars & Cars ended). It was our most magical Disney day ever. But we never like to use the same costume twice, so it's time to try again!

Tanzanite, that Belle gown pattern was from Simplicity. It was in the books until just recently, but you could probably buy one on Ebay.

Itried to see your dress but not sure do i put in your name mom2rtk i havent used a photo place before do i need an account?:cool1:

Sorry Tanzanite, I thought you could search by poster on Flicker. I couldn't figure it out either. Try again, but enter "hollywood studios princess of the day". You'll find it that way.
