Well, you're not really supposed to put tomatoes in Matzoh Ball soup anyway..It's totally wrong to some and could get me in big trouble with many people's mothers..To anyone who has never had a matroh ball they are really good...I also make them with brisket
you might know the name of this i can't remember it and trying to find a recipe so i will ask you.
Growing up in Florida had this really sweet neighbor who mixed matzo (actually called tam tam's) and carrots and celery and onions and other stuff together into a log and bake it. Have you heard of this or know what it is i would love to get the recipe it was something i know my kids would love.

All Dollar Tree stores carry groceries and some even have refridgerated sections. Everything in a Dollar Tree is $1 or less. Big Lots groceries are often $1 or less too.

This isn't true for the one in my city any longer. As with the Dollar Store, our Dollar Tree is not everything is a $1 or less any longer.

Dollar stores and trees are franchises and dollar general they are all different like our target and walmarts don't have grocery stores. We have safeways fred meyers and albertsons and a winco and 4 of western family stores.

My grandmother would sniff at your soup in its entirety. :snooty: She once had a huge fight with my paternal grandmother because the latter put pepper in the chicken soup. The only acceptable ingredients according to my Babbie were raw chicken, water, carrots, onion, celery, parsnip and salt. Parsnip could be omitted in a pinch, but the rest was sacred.

She would probaby have a heart attack if she saw tomatoes in there :lmao:

how old is your son?
My 8 or 10 yr old would never eat that much for breakfast they would probably split the bagel and each eat a banana but to eat that with peach poptarts and cheese and milk that would be part of there lunch and probably mid morning snack. My oldest boy is 5'4 and 130 lbs he's far from starving. and little one is 4ft 65lbs so he's not starving either.

Dawn--my son is only 7. Crazy huh? He is what throws my grocery budget off every week. :rotfl: The other day he asked for more salami after he had finished all the rest of his lunch. I said yes. (Since he had already had 2 peaches and half the bag of carrots. :rolleyes1 ) So he got the deli bag out of the fridge and started chowing down. I had to tell him to STOP that salami was supposed to last for one more lunch. I am considering protein shakes--I have to find a way to fill this kid up.

the $ store is putting in a freezer section.. also thanks Dawn I went to $ genereal and found my oranges for 50 cents.:woohoo:

All of you with younger boys, just wait if you think they eat a lot now.

My son is 21. He's been eating about the same amount for food for five or six years now.

Yesterday he ate:

A heaping bowl of Special K
A bowl of pasta and sauce
A bowl of salad greens with cut up red pepper and tomato and some dressing
The remainder of the small red pepper (grrr I wanted it for tomorrows pizza!)
A peach
A banana
A 12" sub with double meat
A small bowl of rice & beans
A large bowl of ice cream--he would have eaten 1/2 the carton but I told him "enough"
Two 16 ounce glasses of apple juice
Half a gallon of iced tea
A can of soda

The best diet in the world? No, but it's certainly far from being a terrible diet.

A good chunk of it was leftovers from last week, I'm surprised that a lot of them lasted as long as they did. I can't imagine feeding my child as few calories as some of the menus I've seen listed on this thread would provide.

In the produce section they sell for .59 a package (here in town.) smoothie mixes My kids love the strawberry one and i use yogurt (plain) and bananas and oj. I don't add the ice in the am. I make these in the am at school time so they will be full until lunch time. along with there regular breakfast. They say it helps my oldest says it gives him little more energy. There are really great energy smoothie recipes out there for kids I don't believe in protien shakes for kids that's just me. you can but i won't.

Okay, I've read this entire thread & this is what I have found as the top tips for feeding a family (of any size or age group no matter where one lives) for under $10 a day:

#2 Eat free at work (I wanna work there!)

this comment makes me think that it is unbelievable that someone can eat at work for free. They may work in a restaurant, and some restaurants will provide your meal for free, at the cafeteria at the company where I work (Corporate to manufacturing/distribution medical device envornment), all of the cafeteria employees meals are free. WAY back in the days of my teenage years when I worked at pizza hut, we always were allowed 1 free personal pan pizza made at your choice. A friend of mine works at a local (not chain) restaurant here and they get a meal free (if working that day).

They may also work in a corporate environment like I do where during times like trainings or meetings, a continental to even a hot breakfast buffet is set up. Also lunches are catered in either from the cafeteria or restaurant that delivers if you have a working lunch meeting. Happens here ALL the time. Wen our department has to work a company holiday & everyone else is off, they have pizza delivered for lunch. Also, when people have to work overtime in manufacturing, at times they receive cafeteria gift certificates so their meal is free if it is under $5 (a hot meal entree + 2 sides & a bread is only $4.02 with tax, the cafeteria food is subsidized by the company).

So depending on what the person does for a living, its completely believable that they have their meals provided to them at no charge.

This isn't true for the one in my city any longer. As with the Dollar Store, our Dollar Tree is not everything is a $1 or less any longer.

oops! sorry! I wasnt aware Dollar Trees in other area had higher priced items, all the ones in the North FL area I've been to are just a dollar (some items ,but not many, 2/$1)

They need to change the names then to "About a Dollar or so Tree" so you wont feel like you were baited and switched :rotfl:

Some Dollar Trees charge more than a dollar? Even the one here in expensive NY charges a dollar or less for everything in the store. What costs more than a dollar in your store?

#2 Eat free at work (I wanna work there!)

Yeah me too! Actually Google does provide free food for their employees is just ONE of the perks! If I am remembering right, they have 15 different types of food to eat.

Google offers perks, including free cafeteria meals, free use of laundry machines, a child care center, a free annual one-night ski trip (resort destinations vary depending on office location), dog-friendly offices and an on-site doctor. Engineers can devote 20 percent of their time to projects of their choice. Getting hired is the trick.

Every month, aspiring workers deluge the popular Mountain View search engine with up to 150,000 resumes, equivalent to a stack of paper at least 50 feet high. And the firm claims to read each and every one.

Today:

Breakfast
DH cheese toast (homemade whole wheat bread) .25
DD and I: cereal/organic milk 1.00

Snack:
DD: organic yogurt .50
Me: little piece of dark chocolate.10

Lunch:
DH: sandwhich, milk, dark chocolate 1.25
DD: 1 cup organic applesauce and leftover beans and rice .50
Me: Leftover beans and rice, dark chocolate .50

snack:
DD: pretzels (huge bag on sale for $1) .05

Dinner:
Leftover BBQ sandwhiches (made with free deer meat and whole wheat buns) with apple cider viniagrette salad (fruit in there too) 1.25

DH and I drink mostly water but lots of milk as well so add another 2.00 in milk,

Wow, grand total of 7.65!!! I have never added it up daily before, we just stick to $400 per month. Of course this is a cheap day for us. We are out of almost everything and are headed to the farmers market tomorrow.

This board has been a huge help! We just dropped our budget for food down to $400 from $500 (to pay off an unexpected bill) and I had had trouble keeping it under $500! We still buy organic and eat fresh whole foods, I am just more resouceful and creative now (this is not an example of one my creative days!) The rest of the week will of course contain more veggies (we just got back in town yesterday, limited fresh food in the house) so don't eat me alive! This can be a very harsh board!!!!!
